Currently, to manage the urban areas and their associating families, each ward is divided into neighborhoods ({{langx|vi|khu phố}}; {{translation|"quarter"}}), with each neighborhood the most basic organization of population.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has 249 wards and Hanoi has 175 wards.[http://www.gso.gov.vn/default.aspx?tabid=386&idmid=3&ItemID=8589 The data of local administrative subdivisions till 31 December 2008 by Vietnam Statistics General Office.]
