The Asian Footballer of the Year award is an annual prize awarded to the best Asian player in a calendar year.
History
A football handbook took a poll about who was the best Asian footballer in 1985, and this poll is regarded as the origin of the Asian footballer award.{{cite web |url=https://www.rsssf.org/miscellaneous/aspoy84.html |title=Asian Player of the Year 1984 |date=3 January 2008 |access-date=12 June 2020 |first=José |website=RSSSF |last=Pierrend }}{{cite web |url=https://www.sportsmemories.be/Book.aspx?id=7808 |title=THE ASIA-OCEANIA SOCCER HANDBOOK |access-date=1 July 2020 |publisher=Sportsmemories by Heartbooks}} However, it was not a selection of clear process or official organization, and is generally excluded from the list. The award began in 1988 through International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) with sport magazines and journalists, then the presenter was changed to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 1994.{{cite web |title=Asian Player of the Year |url=https://www.rsssf.org/miscellaneous/as-poy.html |access-date=21 October 2013 |first1=José |last1=Pierrend |first2=Erik |website=RSSSF |last2=Garin}}{{cite web |title=Asian Player of the Year |url=http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0930985.html |publisher=Infoplease |access-date=21 October 2013}}
Since 2005, the award gives its qualification to nominees who attend the awards ceremony, and so the rule caused much controversy about excluding players who could not attend the ceremony by playing for European clubs.{{cite web |url=https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/other-sport/2005/12/01/saudi-arabias-hamad-named-asias-top-player |title=Saudi Arabia's Hamad named Asia's top player |publisher=The Star Malaysia |date=1 December 2005 |access-date=10 February 2020}}{{cite web |url=https://cricket.rediff.com/sports/2005/dec/01foot.htm |title=Saudi Arabian is Asia's footballer of the year |work=Rediff.com |date=1 December 2005 |access-date=10 February 2020}}{{cite web |url=https://www.goal.com/en-india/news/2292/editorials/2011/09/20/2674343/the-asian-football-confederation-needs-to-change-the |title=The Asian Football Confederation Needs To Change The Criteria Behind Its Player Of The Year Award |publisher=Goal |first=Ben |last=Somerford |date=20 September 2011 |access-date=12 February 2020}}{{cite web |url=https://www.aljazeera.com/sport/football/2011/11/20111123154815309885.html |title=Djeparov wins AFC Player award |publisher=Al Jazeera |date=24 November 2011 |access-date=10 February 2020}}{{cite web |url=https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/class-act-al-montashari |title=Class act Al Montashari |publisher=The World Game |date=23 April 2014 |access-date=10 February 2020}} Among them, Park Ji-sung and Shunsuke Nakamura were nominated for Ballon d'Or. The AFC is awarding the "Asian International Player of the Year" award to reduce the controversy since 2012, but AFC awards were still having problems that the process and criteria of selection were obscure. Eventually, the "Best Footballer in Asia" award inspired by Ballon d'Or was made in 2013.{{cite web |url=https://www.foxsportsasia.com/football/asian-football/766717/best-footballer-asia-award-need-know/ |title=Best Footballer in Asia award: All you need to know |publisher=Fox Sports Asia |date=26 December 2017 |access-date=10 February 2020 |archive-date=17 April 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190417201747/https://www.foxsportsasia.com/football/asian-football/766717/best-footballer-asia-award-need-know/ |url-status=dead }}
When continental confederations including AFC cancelled their awards ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, IFFHS restarted to select the Players of the Year about the world and each continent.
