At Salzburg, Minamino was played in a fluid attacking role that allowed him to move freely and 'unlock doors, pick a pass and move with an elegant gait.'{{cite web |last1=Green |first1=Ben |title=Takumi Minamino: Liverpool target "archetypal Klopp player" in bargain deal |url=https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2020/11/14/soccer/japan-panama-takumi-minamino/ |website=Squawka |date=14 November 2020 |publisher=Catena Media |access-date=18 November 2020}}

His comparatively slight frame has been described as an 'advantage' as his low centre-of-gravity means he can 'run past players with ease'.{{cite web |last1=Abdullah |first1=Abdullah |title=Tactical Analysis: Red Bull Salzburg's Takumi Minamino |url=https://totalfootballanalysis.com/player-analysis/takumi-minamino-austrian-bundesliga-fc-salzburg-tactical-analysis |website=totalfootballanalysis.com |date=14 December 2018 |publisher=Total Football Analysis |access-date=18 November 2020}}

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has heaped praise on him, saying, prior to him signing for Liverpool, 'I'd like to have Minamino in Liverpool. He's classy. The best talent.'{{cite web |title=Klopp downplays Liverpool's interest in Haland |url=https://www.besoccer.com/new/klopp-downplays-liverpool-s-interest-in-haland-724011 |website=BeSoccer |publisher=BeSoccer.com |access-date=18 November 2020}} After a game against Ajax in the Champions League, Klopp said 'He's everywhere, he defends like a devil and then offensively he's really involved.'{{cite web |title=Jurgen Klopp praises 'machine' Takumi Minamino after Liverpool's win over Ajax |url=https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/22/jurgen-klopp-praises-machine-takumi-minamino-after-liverpools-win-over-ajax-13461859/ |website=Metro |location=UK |date=22 October 2020 |access-date=18 November 2020}}
