History

The convention originated from the anime club at the University of Oregon. Due to the convention's growth, in 2011 it was held in both the Hilton Vancouver Washington and the Red Lion Vancouver at the Quay. Kumoricon expanded to four days in 2014. Due to growth and lack of space, Kumoricon in 2016 moved to the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.{{cite news|last1=Matarrese|first1=Andy|last2=Fischer|first2=Amy|title=Kumoricon leaving Vancouver|url=http://www.columbian.com/news/2015/sep/04/kumoricon-leaving-vancouver/|access-date=22 September 2015|work=The Columbian|date=September 4, 2015}} Demolition of Red Lion's Centennial Center and Kumoricon using six hotels also influenced the decision. Kumoricon used half the convention center in 2019.{{cite news |last1=Harlan |first1=Kohr |title=Kumoricon takes over convention center |url=https://www.koin.com/entertainment-news/kumoricon-takes-over-convention-center/ |access-date=27 November 2019 |work=KOIN |date=15 November 2019}} Kumoricon 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they announced an online convention in its place.{{cite news |last1=Hazra |first1=Adriana |title=Kumoricon Event in Portland Postponed to November 2021 |url=https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-07-19/kumoricon-event-in-portland-postponed-to-november-2021/.161990 |access-date=13 September 2020 |work=Anime News Network |date=July 19, 2020 |language=en}}{{cite news |last1=Hazra |first1=Adriana |title=Kumoricon to Hold Digital Event 'DigiKumo' on November 6–8 |url=https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-07-26/kumoricon-to-hold-digital-event-digikumo-on-november-6-8/.162213 |access-date=13 September 2020 |work=Anime News Network |date=July 26, 2020 |language=en}}{{cite web | url = https://animecons.com/events/info/15460/kumoricon-2020 | title = Kumoricon 2020 Information | publisher = AnimeCons.com | access-date = 2020-09-13}}
