Apogon is a large genus of fish in the family Apogonidae, the cardinalfishes. They are among the most common fish on coral reefs.{{cite journal | last1 = Mabuchi | first1 = K. | last2 = Okuda | first2 = N. | last3 = Nishida | first3 = M. | year = 2006 | title = Molecular phylogeny and stripe pattern evolution in the cardinalfish genus Apogon | url = http://www.ecology.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~nokuda/research%26education/paper%20PDF/Mabuchi%202006.pdf | journal = Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution | volume = 38 | issue = 1| pages = 90–99 | doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2005.05.003 | pmid=15979347}} Over 200 species have been classified in genus Apogon as members of several subgenera. Some of these subgenera, such as Ostorhinchus, have been elevated to genus status,{{cite journal | last1 = Fraser | first1 = T.H. | year = 2014 | title = A new genus of cardinalfish from tropical Australia and southern New Guinea (Percomorpha: Apogonidae) | url = http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2014/f/z03852p293f.pdf | journal = Zootaxa | volume = 3852 | issue = 2| pages = 283–293 | doi=10.11646/zootaxa.3852.2.7| pmid = 25284398 }} leaving just over 50 species in the genus.
