Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977), Tusk (1979), and Mirage (1982) albums. When she was an infant, her parents gave her the nickname "Coco", which she would later name her debut album.{{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2007-10-07-colbie-caillat_N.htm|title=22 million clicks later, MySpace launches Colbie Caillat's career|last=Mansfield|first=Brian|date=October 7, 2007|access-date=January 15, 2011|work=USA Today}}

Caillat took piano lessons as a child, but lacked significant inspiration until she turned 11 years old, when she became enthralled with Lauryn Hill's performance in Sister Act 2.{{cite web|url=http://allmusic.com/artist/colbie-caillat-p920925/biography|title=Colbie Caillat: Biography|last=Lymangrover|first=Jason|year=2007|website=Allmusic|access-date=July 3, 2009}} She realized that she wanted to be a singer, and began taking vocal lessons, performing onstage for the first time in sixth grade.{{cite web|url=http://hoboken.patch.com/articles/colbie-caillat-on-music-education-songwriting-and-stage-fright|title=Colbie Caillat On Music Education, Songwriting and Stage Fright|last=Reuter|first=Annie|work=Hoboken Patch|date=May 26, 2010|access-date=January 15, 2011}} Since then she has covered the Roberta Flack song "Killing Me Softly", which had previously been covered by Lauryn Hill, and Hill's own "Tell Him".

Caillat soon met producer Mikal Blue, who hired her to sing on techno songs used at fashion shows. Caillat began playing the acoustic guitar at age 19, and Blue helped her record her first song.

She auditioned for American Idol in an early season (one of the first four seasons before Bubbly was released), but was rejected at the pre-audition stage and was unable to sing for the judges.{{cite web|url=http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1591609/colbie-caillat-from-idol-reject-john-mayer-tour.jhtml|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120330225811/http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1591609/colbie-caillat-from-idol-reject-john-mayer-tour.jhtml|url-status=dead|archive-date=March 30, 2012|title=Colbie Caillat: From 'American Idol' Reject To John Mayer Tourmate|last=Beavers|first=Danielle|date=July 28, 2008|access-date=January 15, 2011|publisher=MTV News}} The second time she auditioned for the show, she sang her own original song, "Bubbly", and was rejected once again.
