The 29th Cannes Film Festival took place from 13 to 28 May 1976.{{cite web|url=http://www.cinema-francais.fr/cannes/cannes_1976.htm |title=29ème Festival International du Film - Cannes |work=cinema-francais.fr |language=fr |access-date=4 June 2017}} American author Tennessee Williams served as jury president for the main competition.

American filmmaker Martin Scorsese won the Palme d'Or, the festival's top prize, for the drama film Taxi Driver.

A new non-competitive section, L'Air du temps, focused on contemporary subjects was introduced.
