The 1996 Timika shooting ({{langx|id|Insiden Penembakan Timika 1996}}) was a mass shooting that took place on 15 April 1996 at the Mozes Kilangin Airport, Timika, Irian Jaya (now Central Papua), Indonesia, by a member of Kopassus Sec. Lt. Sanurip. Sixteen people were killed and eleven others were injured.
Chronology
According to military spokesmen, Sanurip was reprimanded by another officer for being noisy when he awoke in a hangar that was used by the military as a commando post since the riots in Timika had erupted. As a reaction to this Sanurip began firing with his assault rifle at about 7 a.m. He first shot five other military personnel, including Lieutenant Colonel Adel Gustinigo, commander of Detachment 81, the counter-terrorist arm of the Indonesian army's elite special forces, as well as a major and captain, and then shot indiscriminately at anyone, while running out of the hangar.[http://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/04/16/0094.html Musibah di Timika] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160306154247/https://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/04/16/0094.html |date=6 March 2016 }}, Kompas (16 April 1996)[http://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/04/18/0009.html ABRI Officer Kills 15 in Timika] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160306133816/https://www.library.ohiou.edu/indopubs/1996/04/18/0009.html |date=6 March 2016 }}, Kompas (17 April 1996)
Within seconds he killed 16 people – five Kopassus officers, six ABRI soldiers and five civilians, one of them New Zealander Michael Findlay, a helicopter pilot working for Airfast – and injuring another 13 people, ten ABRI officers and three civilians. Sanurip was ultimately subdued by other soldiers after being shot in the leg.{{cite news | url = http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/e/a/1996/04/15/NEWS7595.dtl&hw=benazir&sn=180&sc=320 | title = 14 die in gun battle at New Guinea airport | access-date = 2012-12-24 | publisher = San Francisco Chronicle | date = 1996-04-15}}{{cite news

Motive
The motive behind the rampage was not immediately known, though it was suggested that Sanurip was suffering from depression and was not in a healthy state, perhaps due to a malaria infection.
It was further reported that an army transporter, carrying two soldiers killed in Mapenduma, made a fuel stop at Timika airport that morning, and that Sanurip began shooting after seeing their remains and realising that one of them was a friend of his, though it was stated by military spokesmen this information was not true and that there was no connection between the arrival of the bodies and the mass murder.{{cite web | url = http://www.converge.org.nz/wpapua/The-archives-1996.html | title = Jarkarta probes killing of 15 in Irian Jaya | access-date = 2012-12-24 | publisher = Papua New Guinea Post-Courier | date = 1996-04-17}}

Lieutenant Sanurip from Group Is Battalion 12, who had been deployed on the Irian operation since January, went berserk at the Timika airfield. Firing 52 bullets from his assault rifle, he killed ten fellow soldiers (including the commander and deputy commander of Detachment 81) and six civilians, including a New Zealand pilot flying for Airfast. There was considerable speculation over the reason for the outburst, but it was widely suspected that the lieutenant had had a simmering dispute with his task force commander.

... Officer sentenced to death for 1996 shooting incident in Jayapura
Excerpt from report by Indonesian newspaper 'Kompas' (Internet version)
The Jayapura Military Court in Irian Jaya on Tuesday (22 April) handed down a death sentence for Infantry Second Lt Sanurip, age 37, an officer of Group 1 of the 12th Battalion of the Special Forces Command. Sanurip was found guilty of shooting fellow ABRI [Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia] personnel and civilians at a Freeport McMoRan Company hangar in Timika, on 15 April 1996. Sanurip immediately decided to appeal the verdict. Presiding Judge Col Amiruddin Rokhim, who was accompanied by members Lt-Col Subiranto and Infantry Maj Akhiruddin, read the verdict for about 85 minutes. In addition, Sanurip was sacked from ABRI and all service medals and national medals that had been awarded to him were revoked... Source: 'Kompas' Jakarta, in Indonesian 23 Apr 97 [8]
