The 2014 Tirreno–Adriatico was the 49th edition of the Tirreno–Adriatico cycling stage race, often known as the Race of the Two Seas. It started on 12 March in Donoratico and ended on 18 March in San Benedetto del Tronto, and consisted of seven stages, including a team time trial to begin the race and an individual time trial to conclude it. It was the third race of the 2014 UCI World Tour season.
The race was won by Spain's Alberto Contador of {{UCI team code|SAX|2014}},{{cite news|url=http://www1.skysports.com/cycling/news/12040/9220351/tirreno-adriatico-alberto-contador-wins-race-as-bradley-wiggins-takes-third-on-last-stage|title=Alberto Contador wins race as Bradley Wiggins takes third on last stage|work=Sky Sports|publisher=BSkyB|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}} who took the lead after winning his second successive stage on the fifth stage – following on from a win in the race's queen stage to Cittareale – and held the lead until the finish in San Benedetto del Tronto, to become the first Spanish rider to win the race since Óscar Freire in 2005.{{cite news|url=http://deportes.elpais.com/deportes/2014/03/18/actualidad/1395156246_448337.html|language=es|title=En el cielo de Contador|trans-title=Contador in heaven|work=El País|publisher=Ediciones El País, S.L.|first=Carlos|last=Arribas|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}} Contador won the general classification by two minutes and five seconds over runner-up Nairo Quintana of the {{UCI team code|MOV|2014}},{{cite news|url=http://www.movistarteam.com/news/2014-3-18/adriano-nairo-make-for-double-surprise|title=Adriano & Nairo make for double surprise|work={{UCI team code|MOV|2014}}|publisher=Abarca Sports|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}} while Contador's teammate Roman Kreuziger completed the podium,{{cite news|url=http://www.tinkoffsaxo.com/news/contador-wins-tirreno-adriatico-grand-style/|title=Contador wins Tirreno-Adriatico in grand style|work={{UCI team code|SAX|2014}}|publisher=Tinkoff Sport|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}} nine seconds behind Quintana and two minutes and fourteen seconds down on Contador.{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/26635872|title=Contador wins Tirreno-Adriatico with Wiggins third in time trial|work=BBC Sport|publisher=BBC|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}}
In the race's other classifications, {{UCI team code|CAN|2014}}'s Peter Sagan was the winner of the red jersey for the points classification,{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/tirreno-adriatico-2014/stage-7/results|title=Contador wins Tirreno-Adriatico|first=Peter|last=Hymas|work=Cyclingnews.com|publisher=Future plc|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014}} amassing the highest number of points during stages at intermediate sprints and stage finishes, and Marco Canola was the winner of the mountains classification for the {{UCI team code|CSF|2014}} team.{{cite news|url=http://www.bardianicsf.com/news-bilancio-positivo-br-della-tirreno-adriatico-en.php|title=Positive evaluation of the Tirreno-Adriatico|work={{UCI team code|CSF|2014}}|publisher=Aster Sport Ltd.|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140319012734/http://www.bardianicsf.com/news-bilancio-positivo-br-della-tirreno-adriatico-en.php|archive-date=19 March 2014|url-status=dead|df=dmy-all}} Quintana also won the white jersey for the young rider classification, as he was the highest placed rider born in 1989 or later, while the {{UCI team code|ALM|2014}} squad won the team classification, placing riders Jean-Christophe Péraud and Domenico Pozzovivo inside the top ten overall.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclisme.ag2rlamondiale.fr/english/news/actualites-detail.asp?id=1038|title=The Ag2r La Mondiale Team shines on Tirreno-Adriatico|work={{UCI team code|ALM|2014}}|publisher=EUSRL France Cyclisme|date=18 March 2014|access-date=18 March 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140316224552/http://www.cyclisme.ag2rlamondiale.fr/english/news/actualites-detail.asp?id=1038|archive-date=16 March 2014|url-status=dead|df=dmy-all}}
The final time trial was almost irrelevant from the winner's point of view as Alberto Contador had more than two minutes in hand on next best placed rider Nairo Quintana of the {{UCI team code|MOV|2014}}. There were some changes further down the GC as a result of the time trial though as Jean-Christophe Péraud moved above Julián Arredondo in to 4th place and Michele Scarponi moved up to the top ten as a result of a strong ride.
