The 2019–20 season was Wigan Athletic's 88th year in existence and their second consecutive season in the Championship. Along with competing in the league, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. The season covered the period from 1 July 2019 to 22 July 2020.
Season summary
On 4 June 2020, International Entertainment Corporation (IEC) sold the club to a Hong Kong based consortium, Next Leader Fund (NLF).{{cite web |title=Wigan Athletic: Championship club taken over by Next Leader Fund |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52920816 |website=BBC Sport |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=4 June 2020}} A few weeks later, on 1 July 2020, Wigan announced the club had gone into administration. The story received national media attention; it was reported that Au Yeung Wai Kay, initially a minor shareholder of NLF, took full ownership of the club on 24 June, but on the same day withdrew all funding for the club, and approached Begbies Traynor about putting the club into administration.{{cite web |last1=Conn |first1=David |title=Brutal and bizarre: the story of how Wigan collapsed into administration |url=https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/02/story-of-how-wigan-collapsed-into-administration-au-yeung-investigation |website=The Guardian |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=2 July 2020}}{{cite web |last1=Crafton |first1=Adam |last2=Hughes |first2=Simon |title=How Wigan Athletic were torn apart by an invisible owner |url=https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/1907722/2020/07/04/wigan-athletic-royle-efl-paul-cook-hong-kong-yeung/ |website=The Athletic |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=4 July 2020}} Au Yeung released a statement claiming he had the "best intentions" when buying the club, and blamed the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for putting the club into administration.{{cite web |title=Wigan Athletic appeal against points deduction as staff are made redundant |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53318930 |website=BBC Sport |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=7 July 2020}} Wigan MP Lisa Nandy criticised the English Football League (EFL) for approving the takeover, and called for a full inquiry.{{cite web |title=Wigan Athletic: Administration is a 'major global scandal' says MP |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53261368 |website=BBC Sport |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=3 July 2020}}
The EFL handed a 12-point penalty to the club as a result of entering administration.{{cite web|url=https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11682/12018794/wigan-enter-administration-efl-to-hand-club-12-point-penalty|title=Wigan enter administration; EFL to hand club 12-point penalty|website=Sky Sports|date=1 July 2020|access-date=1 July 2020}} This, however, did not put a halt to their run of good form and on 14 July, Wigan defeated Hull City 8–0, the biggest league win in the club's history.{{cite web|url=https://talksport.com/football/732390/wigan-hit-seven-past-hull-championship-fighting-relegation/|title=Wigan record biggest win in history after hitting EIGHT past relegation rivals Hull in extraordinary Championship clash|website=Talk Sport|date=14 July 2020|access-date=15 July 2020}} Despite losing just once in their last fifteen games, Wigan were relegated to League One due to the points deduction. Shortly after the season finished, the club appealed unsuccessfully against the points deduction on the grounds of force majeure.{{cite web |title=Wigan Athletic relegated after losing appeal against 12-point penalty |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53649840 |website=BBC Sport |access-date=12 June 2025 |date=4 August 2020}}
