The 2024 J1 League, also known as the {{Nihongo|2024 Meiji Yasuda J1 League|2024 明治安田J1リーグ|2024 Meiji Yasuda J1 Rīgu|lead=yes}} for sponsorship reasons, was the 32nd season of J1 League, the top Japanese professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1992. This was the tenth season of the league since its rebrand from J.League Division 1.

Vissel Kobe were the defending champions, having won their first ever league title with one match to spare in the previous season.{{cite web |title=Vissel Kobe win 2023 Meiji Yasuda J1 League title |publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co|date=25 November 2023 |url=https://www.jleague.co/news/vissel-kobe-2023-meiji-yasuda-j1-league-champions/}} They retained their league title on the last matchday.{{cite web |url=https://www.jleague.co/news/jleague-matchweek-38-recap-vissel-are-champions-again/|title=J.League Matchweek 38 Recap: Vissel are champions again |publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co|date=9 December 2024|accessdate=11 December 2024 }}

Overview

For the first time since 2021, the number of the clubs in the league increased from 18 to 20. At the end of season, three clubs were relegated to the J2 League for the 2025 season, without relegation play-offs between J1 and J2 clubs.{{cite news |title=League Structure and Competition Format from 2024 Season Unify the number of clubs in each category to 20 League Cup changed to a knockout competition with participation of all J1, J2 and J3 clubs |url=https://aboutj.jleague.jp/corporate/en/release/league-structure-and-competition-format-from-2024-season-unify-the-number-of-clubs-in-each-category-to-20-league-cup-changed-to-a-knockout-competition-with-participation-of-all-j1-j2-and-j3-clubs/ |access-date=9 February 2023 |publisher=Japan Professional Football League |date=21 December 2022}}

Changes from the previous season

Only one club was relegated to the 2024 J2 League. Due to the re-introduction of 20 clubs league format, Yokohama FC became the sole team going down to the second division, after just one season in the J1 League. They have been replaced by three teams promoted from the 2023 J2 League. The first club promoted was Tokyo-based Machida Zelvia, debuting in the J1 as the J2 champions following a seven-year run in the Japanese second tier.{{Cite web|url=https://www.jleague.co/news/machida-zelvia-clinches-first-ever-promotion-to-j1/ |title=Machida Zelvia clinches first-ever promotion to J1 |access-date=2 December 2023 |date=22 October 2023 |publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co }}{{Cite web|url=https://www.jleague.co/en/news/fc-machida-zelvia-2023-j2-league-champions-title-recap/ |title=FC Machida Zelvia cap amazing season with J2 title|website=JLeague.co |access-date=2 December 2023 |date=30 October 2023 |publisher=Japan Professional Football League }} Another automatic promotion spot was obtained by Júbilo Iwata, who made a swift comeback after just a single season absence by finishing second, thus marking the return of a team from Shizuoka in the Japanese first division since 2022.{{Cite web|url=https://www.jleague.co/news/jubilo-iwata-j2-promotion-j1-league-2023/ |title=Júbilo Iwata win on final day to earn promotion to J1 |access-date=2 December 2023 |date=12 November 2023|publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co }} The last promotion spot was earned by Tokyo Verdy, returning to the top flight for the first time since 2008 by finishing third in the J2 League and later won the promotion play-offs. This brings back the Tokyo derby between Verdy and FC Tokyo in the J1 for the first time since that season as well as the first season in which three clubs from the capital city are competing at the highest tier of Japanese football system.{{Cite web|url=https://www.jleague.co/news/s-pulse-vs-tokyo-verdy-recap-promotion-play-off-final/ |title=Tokyo Verdy promoted back to J1 after dramatic play-off final |access-date=2 December 2023 |date=2 December 2023|publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co }}{{Cite news |date=2 December 2023 |title=Football: Late draw seals J1 return for Verdy at Shimizu's expense |work=Mainichi Shimbun|url=https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20231202/p2g/00m/0sp/036000c |access-date=2 December 2023}}

Schedule

The league and match format was announced on 19 December 2023. The league began on 23 February and ended on 8 December; it was played in a double round-robin format with 38 fixtures in total.{{cite web |title=2024明治安田J2リーグ 大会方式および試合方式について|publisher=Japan Professional Football League |website=JLeague.co|url=https://www.jleague.jp/news/article/26782/ |access-date=23 January 2024 |date=19 December 2023|language=ja}}
