History
In 1928 a group of United States biochemists and physiologists grouped together to form the first scientific society focused on nutrition, the American Institute for Nutrition. The Society held its first meeting at the Cornell Medical School in 1934. The society was renamed the American Society for Nutritional Sciences in 1996.{{cite web | url=http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/diglib/sc_diglib/americansociety/index.html | title=The Nutrition Society Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary | publisher=Vanderbilt University Medical Center | accessdate=30 September 2015}}
In 2005, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (established 1961), and the Society for International Nutrition (established 1996) merged to form The American Society for Nutrition (ASN).{{Cite web |title=ASN History & Archives |url=https://nutrition.org/about-asn/asn-history/ |access-date=2024-06-22 |website=American Society for Nutrition |language=en-US}}
As of 2024, ASN has a membership of more than 8,000.{{Cite web |title=Membership |url=https://nutrition.org/our-members/ |access-date=2024-06-22 |website=American Society for Nutrition |language=en-US}} It is one of the constituent societies comprising the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a non-profit organization that is the principal umbrella organization of U.S. societies in the field of biological and medical research.
In October 2010, the American College of Nutrition and American Society for Nutrition proposed to merge.[2]{{Update inline|date=August 2018}}

Publications
ASN owns four academic journals, and occasionally uses them to self-publish content independent of the journal's editorial review process. Some of the journals' editorial staff accept funding from food industry organizations. As of 2018, the ASN-run journals are printed by the Oxford University Press.{{cite web |title=American Society for Nutrition Journals {{!}} Oxford Academic |url=https://academic.oup.com/asn |website=OUP Academic |language=en}}

Corporate relationship concerns
The ASN has conflicting interests in taking funding from food industry marketing groups while providing unbiased information on nutrition; these conflicting interests have caused criticism and concerns of bias.{{Cite web| last = O’Connor| first = Anahad| title = Coca-Cola Funds Scientists Who Shift Blame for Obesity Away From Bad Diets| work = Well| accessdate = 2018-03-24| date = 2015-08-09| url = https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/coca-cola-funds-scientists-who-shift-blame-for-obesity-away-from-bad-diets/}}{{Cite journal| doi = 10.1016/j.nutres.2016.10.006| pmid = 27955723| issn = 0271-5317| volume = 36| issue = 11| pages = 1183–1192| last1 = Rucker| first1 = Robert B.| last2 = Rucker| first2 = Michael R.| title = Nutrition: ethical issues and challenges| journal = Nutrition Research|date=November 2016| doi-access = free}} ASN actions have also been criticized for being better-aligned with the nutritional advice of sponsors than the advice of the World Health Organization and other public health, public interest, and government organizations.{{Cite web| last = Bellatti| first = Andy| title = OPINION: Industry-funded nutrition groups shouldn't dictate health policy| accessdate = 2018-03-31| date = 2015-06-24| url = http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2015/6/industry-funded-nutrition-groups-shouldnt-dictate-health-policy.html}}{{Cite web| last1 = Mustain| first1 = Patrick| title = Science for Sale: Big Food's Influence on Top Nutrition Research Org| work = Scientific American Blog Network| date = June 15, 2015 |accessdate = 2018-03-31| url = https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/food-matters/science-for-sale-big-food-s-influence-on-top-nutrition-research-org/}}
