Early life and career

In an interview with RTL Nederland, she stated that she sometimes skipped classes to self-educate in the public library at the Prinsengracht. Nanninga subsequently dropped out of school as a teenager and held various jobs including in an ice cream parlor, as a caterer and in a fashion store.[https://www.rtlz.nl/business/artikel/4658136/carriere-annabel-nanninga-forum-voor-democratie-fvd Van ijsjes verkopen naar politiek: de carrière van FvD-kopstuk Annabel Nanninga], RTL Z, 29 maart 2019. She was also a columnist for DeJaap magazine.{{cite web|title=Annabel Nanninga stapt over van Jalta.nl naar TPO.nl|url=http://media.tpo.nl/2015/12/14/annabel-nanninga-stapt-over-van-jalta-nl-naar-tpo-nl/|url-status=live|work=ThePostOnline|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190601041523/https://media.tpo.nl/2015/12/14/annabel-nanninga-stapt-over-van-jalta-nl-naar-tpo-nl/|archive-date=1 June 2019|date=14 December 2015}}

Political career

In the 2018 Dutch municipal elections, she was the party leader for Forum for Democracy (FVD) in Amsterdam.{{cite web|title=Columnist Annabel Nanninga wordt FvD-lijsttrekker in Amsterdam - Elsevierweekblad.nl|url=http://www.elsevierweekblad.nl/nederland/achtergrond/2017/10/journalist-annabel-nanninga-wordt-fvd-lijsttrekker-in-amsterdam-552520/|url-status=live|author=Elif Isitman|work=Elsevierweekblad.nl|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171107030126/http://www.elsevierweekblad.nl/nederland/achtergrond/2017/10/journalist-annabel-nanninga-wordt-fvd-lijsttrekker-in-amsterdam-552520/|archive-date=7 November 2017|date=2017-10-22|access-date=2017-11-01}}{{cite web|title=Columniste Nanninga lijsttrekker Forum voor Democratie in Amsterdam|url=https://nos.nl/artikel/2199110-columniste-nanninga-lijsttrekker-forum-voor-democratie-in-amsterdam.html|url-status=live|publisher=NOS|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171107004427/https://nos.nl/artikel/2199110-columniste-nanninga-lijsttrekker-forum-voor-democratie-in-amsterdam.html|archive-date=7 November 2017|access-date=2017-11-01}} FVD received three seats in the municipal council. Nanninga was sworn in as a councilor on March 29, 2018. In March 2019 she also became a member of the Provincial Council of North Holland. In the same elections, she was elected in the Provincial Council of Utrecht with preferential votes.[https://web.archive.org/web/20190915090149/https://www.provincie-utrecht.nl/publish/pages/336771/2019-03-vaststelling-uitslag-ps2019-utrecht.pdf Proces-verbaal van de verkiezingsuitslag van de provinciale staten van Utrecht] In October 2020 Nanninga went on maternity leave and was temporarily replaced by Hugo Berkhout and later by Robert Baljeu in the Senate.[https://www.eerstekamer.nl/nieuws/20201026/berkhout_fvd_en_keunen_vvd_beedigd Berkhout (FVD) en Keunen (VVD) beëdigd als lid van de Eerste Kamer], eerstekamer.nl, 26 oktober 2020. In November 2020, she left the FvD, when this party, in her opinion, did not distance itself fiercely enough from antisemitic apps written by members of its youth division.{{Cite web |last=Redactie |date=2020-11-26 |title=Eerdmans, Nanninga, Pouw en Vlaardingerbroek weg bij FvD |url=https://www.trouw.nl/politiek/eerdmans-nanninga-pouw-en-vlaardingerbroek-weg-bij-fvd~b9405692/ |access-date=2023-02-23 |website=Trouw |language=nl-NL}} Together with former FvD candidate Joost Eerdmans she founded the party JA21. On February 15, 2021, she returned to the Senate from her leave and joined the Van Pareren faction, which was renamed the Nanninga faction and has 7 seats. The faction subsequently became part of JA21.

Controversies

Nanninga posted a series of tweets on her Twitter page in 2006, which by some people were deemed antisemitic. According to others, her tweets were shown out of context and twisted in order to discredit her.{{Cite web |last=Reve |first=Jonathan van het |date=2018-03-12 |title=Net als bij de IS-tweet van Nida was bij antisemitische tweets van Annabel Nanninga niemand geïnteresseerd in de context |url=https://www.volkskrant.nl/columns-opinie/net-als-bij-de-is-tweet-van-nida-was-bij-antisemitische-tweets-van-annabel-nanninga-niemand-geinteresseerd-in-de-context~ba6c34f8/ |access-date=2023-02-23 |website=de Volkskrant |language=nl-NL}} These tweets were retroactively deleted during 2020–21, however multiple internet archives contain screenshots of the tweets. In subsequent interviews, Nanninga stated that the tweets were intended to be satirical and had to be considered in their specific context, on which she extensively elaborated in Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad.{{Cite web |date=2019-03-29 |title=‘Ik ben het probleem niet’ |url=https://niw.nl/ik-ben-het-probleem-niet/ |access-date=2023-02-23 |website=NIW |language=nl}} Nanninga also encountered some controversy over columns, in which she criticised the influx of migrants during the European refugee crisis and made satirical remarks regarding migrants from Africa trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Nanninga later claimed she used the ironic writing style of Gerard Reve.[https://www.geenstijl.nl/3911571/het_is_weer_lente_de_grote_ove/ Het is weer lente! In 2015, at the height of the refugee crisis, she sheltered a homosexual asylumseeker in her house for six months, because he was harassed at the asylum center.{{cite web|access-date=2023-03-03|date=2017-07-22|first=Ariejan|language=nl-NL|last=Korteweg|title=Annabel Nanninga: 'Ik nam een asielzoeker in huis'|url=https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/annabel-nanninga-ik-nam-een-asielzoeker-in-huis~b165aee2/|work=de Volkskrant}}{{cite web|access-date=2023-03-03|date=2020-08-07|first=Fleur|language=nl|last=Verbeek|title=Nanninga (FVD) haalt hard uit naar VVD na gruwelijke aanval op lesbische asielzoeker - EW|url=https://www.ewmagazine.nl/nederland/achtergrond/2020/08/lesbische-asielzoeker-aangevallen-in-azc-zware-brandwonden-770235/|work=EWmagazine.nl}}

Personal life

Nanninga has three children: her first daughter was born when she was 19 years old; her second daughter followed three years later. In 2020 she had a son.[https://www.rtlz.nl/business/artikel/4658136/carriere-annabel-nanninga-forum-voor-democratie-fvd Van ijsjes verkopen naar politiek: de carrière van FvD-kopstuk Annabel Nanninga], RTL Z, 29 maart 2019.
