Recognition

AllMusic describes it as "Arguably, the greatest rock single ever recorded".{{cite web|url=http://www.allmusic.com/song/another-girl-another-planet-mt0002099863|title=Another Girl, Another Planet - The Only Ones - Listen, Appearances, Song Review - AllMusic|author=Andy Claps|work=AllMusic|access-date=18 January 2015}}

The song was placed at number 18 in John Peel's all-time Festive Fifty millennium edition. Playing it in 1980's Festive Fifty, he introduced it as an "artful little caprice".{{cite web|url=http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/festive50lists.htm#All%20time%20festive%2050%20-%20%20Year%202000|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060405115334/http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/festive50lists.htm#All%20time%20festive%2050%20-%20%20Year%202000|url-status=usurped|archive-date=April 5, 2006|title=Rocklist.net...John Peel's Festive 50's - 1977 - 2003 .....|publisher=Rocklistmusic.co.uk|access-date=18 January 2015}} In March 2005, Q magazine placed the song at number 83 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.{{cite web|url=http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/qlistspage3.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060224054627/http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/qlistspage3.htm |url-status=usurped |archive-date=February 24, 2006 |title=Rocklist.net...Q Magazine Lists |website=Rocklistmusic.co.uk |access-date=13 October 2016}}

The song is widely believed to be about heroinAndrew Stafford, Something to Believe In, University of Queensland Press, 2019

"A fantastic song with an amazing guitar line," enthused Tim Wheeler of Northern Irish rock band Ash. "It took me a long time to figure out that it's about drugs – not a girl from another planet – and that space travel is a metaphor for being high. It was Peter Perrett's heroin-heavy drawl that eventually gave it away".{{cite magazine|first= Tim |last= Wheeler |author-link= Tim Wheeler |title= Sci-fi rocks |magazine= Q |date= August 2007 |page= 117}} In an interview in 2015 Perrett declared that the song has been actually inspired by a girl and that it is not about heroin, nevertheless admitting that he always enjoyed "writing ambiguous lyrics that could be taken on two or three different levels".{{Cite web|url=https://www.uncut.co.uk/features/peter-perrett-wasnt-drugs-time-addicted-sex-99985 |author=Pinnock, Tom |title=Peter Perrett: "It wasn't about drugs{{nbsp}}... at that time, I was more addicted to sex"|date=13 April 2017|website=Uncut}}
