Aristide Colonna

Colonna was born in contrada Torre del piccolo of Fiumefreddo Bruzio, a Calabrese comune in the province of Cosenza, from Enrico and Annamaria, who at the time of his birth weren't married yet. After graduating from high school he moved to Rome, where he studied classics at the Sapienza University with Nicola Festa, Nicola Terzaghi and Silvio Giuseppe Mercati. He graduated on 26 June 1930 (his advisor was Festa), with a dissertation titled Heliodori Aethiopica ad codices nunc primum excussos recognovit adnotatione critica instruxit A. C. ("The Aethiopica of Heliodorus, edited with critical apparatus by A. In 1952 he became Professor in Classics at the University of Messina, and delivered the opening speech for the 1952–1953 academic year (La fondazione di Messina nella poesia di Callimaco ["The Foundation of Messina in the poetry of Callimachus"]).{{Sfn|Colonna|1952–1953}} In 1954 he moved to the University of Perugia where he taught until 1979. In that year he became "professore fuori ruolo", and retired in 1984.In the Italian university system of the time, Professors were put "fuori ruolo" in the academic year in which they turned 70, and retired after the academic year in which they turned 75. Colonna studied Greek literature from the beginnings to the Byzantine era, working on Phrynichus, Himerius, Hesiod, Themistius, Libanius and Sophocles,{{Harvs|last=Sophocles|year=1975|year2=1978|year3=1983|nb=yes|txt=yes}}. also working on Tzetzes, Psellus and Eustathius.{{Harvnb|Colonna|1972a}}. Related to Heliodorus, he studied Philagathus of Cerami and his commentary on the Aethiopica.{{Harvs|last=Colonna|year=1960|year2=1982b|year3=1982c|year4=1992|nb=yes|txt=yes}}.
