The first leg of the tour kicked off January 22, 2001 in the U.S.{{cite press release |last1=Schneider |first1=Mitch |last2=Rondan |first2=Marcee |last3=Brodginski |first3=Todd |date=January 23, 2001 |title=Backstreet Boys Kick Off Worldwide "BLACK & BLUE TOUR 2001" |url=http://www.msopr.com/press-releases/backstreet-boys-kick-off-worldwide-black-blue-tour-2001/ |location=Los Angeles |publisher=Mitch Schneider Organization |access-date=December 9, 2013 |archive-date=March 9, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160309193251/http://www.msopr.com/press-releases/backstreet-boys-kick-off-worldwide-black-blue-tour-2001/ |url-status=dead }} The second leg began June 8 in the group's hometown of Orlando, Florida and was temporarily put on hold July 9, in order for group member AJ McLean to seek treatment for clinical depression which led to anxiety attacks and the excessive consumption of alcohol. The tour resumed August 24 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and wrapped up October 19 in Paradise, Nevada. BSB's world tour came to a close by the end of 2001. It grossed over $315 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing concert tour by an artist in general of the year.{{cite web |url=http://blog.jivewired.com/2010/11/whats-wrong-with-music-today.html |title=What's Wrong With Music Today |date=November 18, 2010 |access-date=May 10, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160311220108/http://blog.jivewired.com/2010/11/whats-wrong-with-music-today.html |archive-date=March 11, 2016 |url-status=dead }} The tour was sponsored by Burger King,{{cite press release |author= |title=Backstreet Boys Fans 'Have It Their Way' at Burger King(R) Burger King Corporation Launches Unprecedented CD and Video Promotion |url=http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/backstreet-boys-fans-have-it-their-way-at-burger-kingr-burger-king-corporation-launches-unprecedented-cd-and-video-promotion-72917112.html |location=Miami, Florida |publisher=PR Newswire |date=August 18, 2000 |access-date=December 9, 2013}} Kellogg's, and Polaroid.{{cite web |url=http://www.chiefmarketer.com/special-reports-chief-marketer/polaroid-sponsors-backstreet-boys-summer-tour-29032001 |title=Polaroid Sponsors Backstreet Boys Summer Tour |author= |date=March 29, 2001 |website=Chief Marketer |publisher=Access Intelligence, LLC |access-date=December 9, 2013}}

On September 11, 2001, band member Brian Littrell's wife Leighanne and a crew member for the band, Daniel Lee, were scheduled to fly from Boston, where the group played their fifth sold-out show the night before to Los Angeles on American Airlines Flight 11. Leighanne canceled her flight the night before because she wanted to spend more time with her husband, but Lee was one of 92 people killed aboard Flight 11 after it was hijacked and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.[http://www.kentucky.com/2006/09/10/10835/backstreet-boy-feels-victims-families.html Backstreet Boys Feels Victims Families]{{cite web|title=2,996- 9-11 Tribute: Daniel John Lee|url=http://mommyneedscoffee.com/2006/09/2996-9-11-tribute-daniel-john-lee/|access-date=February 13, 2013}} Near the end of their concert in Toronto on September 12, Littrell spoke briefly about Lee and led the audience in a moment of silence for Lee and those who died in the attacks.{{cite web|title=Air Canada Centre, Toronto – September 12, 2001|url=http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Artists/B/Backstreet_Boys/ConcertReviews/2004/08/13/581422.html|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130115134227/http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Artists/B/Backstreet_Boys/ConcertReviews/2004/08/13/581422.html|url-status=usurped|archive-date=January 15, 2013|access-date=August 28, 2012|date=September 13, 2001}}
