Influences
Clairo recalled that the Shins' Wincing the Night Away (2007) was the first album she "really completely geeked out over", crediting it as her inspiration to make music.{{cite web |last1=Wang |first1=Steffannee |date=May 24, 2018 |title=Clairo would like to leave her bedroom now, please |url=https://www.thefader.com/2018/05/24/clairo-diary-001-pretty-girl-4ever-interview |website=The Fader |access-date=August 23, 2019 |archive-date=April 17, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210417183027/https://www.thefader.com/2018/05/24/clairo-diary-001-pretty-girl-4ever-interview |url-status=live }} Since many around her told her that a career in music was unlikely, she did not consider it a prospect and therefore did "whatever" she wanted musically. She said that her musical influences were a mixture of her mother and father's musical tastes, citing artists including Al Green, Brenton Wood, Billy Paul, Cocteau Twins, Trashcan Sinatras, the The, and Public Image Ltd.{{Cite web |last=Kahn |first=Jamie |date=March 7, 2022 |title=Clairo reveals her biggest musical influences |url=https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/clairo-biggest-musical-influences/ |access-date=March 3, 2023 |website=Far Out |archive-date=March 16, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230316045132/https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/clairo-biggest-musical-influences/ |url-status=live }}

=Nepotism allegations=
After the success of "Pretty Girl", a number of social media users (specifically on discussion website Reddit) began claiming that Clairo was an "industry plant" who gained success through her father's nepotism. She denied the claims, calling them sexist. Writers for The Guardian and The Ringer also stated that her father's connections facilitated her record contract signing.{{cite news |last1=Empire |first1=Kitty |author-link1=Kitty Empire |date=December 7, 2019 |title=Clairo review – a quiet phenomenon |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/dec/07/clairo-live-electric-ballroom-london |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210719163802/https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/dec/07/clairo-live-electric-ballroom-london |archive-date=July 19, 2021 |access-date=July 13, 2020 |work=The Guardian}}
