Early life

Díaz-Reixa was born as an only child in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. After finishing high school, he moved to Barcelona, Spain, for college, where he majored in media studies. While in the city, he started to make music and was a member of the band Coconot.{{cite news|last=Sancho |first=Xavi |url=https://elpais.com/diario/2008/03/28/tentaciones/1206732173_850215.html|title=Pronto sabrás quién es El Guincho|website=El País|date=March 27, 2008|access-date=September 8, 2021}}

Career

=Beginnings and first two albums: 2007–2014=

He released his first album, Folías, independently in 2007. In October 2008, he released his breakthrough album, Alegranza, which was well received by critics, including earning a "Best New Music" designation by Pitchfork.{{Cite web |title=El Guincho: Alegranza! |url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/11200-alegranza/ |access-date=2022-06-24 |website=Pitchfork |language=en-US}} He would spend the next two years touring the album worldwide.

In September 2010, Díaz-Reixa released Pop Negro, under British independent label Young Turks. The album includes the now popular single "Bombay." Notably, he worked on Björk's 2011 album Biophilia. Previously, in 2008, he remixed her on Enjoyed: A Tribute to Björk's Post.{{cite web|url=https://pitchfork.com/news/45663-death-grips-these-new-puritans-matthew-herbert-el-guincho-hudson-mohawke-on-bjork-remix-series/|title=Death Grips, These New Puritans, Matthew Herbert, El Guincho, Hudson Mohawke on Björk Remix Series|website=Pitchfork|first=Carrie|last=Battan|date=March 6, 2012|access-date=September 8, 2021}}

=''Hiperasia'' and producing for Rosalía: 2014–present=

While temporarily living in his hometown of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Díaz-Reixa worked on a collection of music that would later be his next album, Hiperasia. With a departure from his tropical sound, the album takes influences from trap and electronic music, employing heavy use of Vocoder and Autotune. It was released in February 2016.{{cite web|url=https://www.indierocks.mx/musica/resenas/el-guincho-hiperasia/|title=El Guincho - Hiperasia|website=Indie Rocks|first=Luis|last=Avilés|date=February 11, 2016|access-date=September 8, 2021|language=es}}

That same year, Díaz-Reixa saw Spanish singer Rosalia live, and, fascinated by her sound, contacted her through social media to collaborate.{{cite web|url=https://www.revistavanityfair.es/cultura/entretenimiento/articulos/el-guincho-rosalia-productor-quien-es/47664|title=EL GUINCHO, EL MÚSICO CANARIO DETRÁS DEL ÉXITO DE ROSALÍA DE LA QUE SE 'ENAMORÓ' EN UN TABLAO FLAMENCO|website=Vanity Fair España|first=Nuria|last=Hernández|date=November 18, 2020|access-date=September 8, 2021|language=es}} He would later be sole producer of her sophomore album El Mal Querer, released in 2018. The album received critical acclaim.{{Citation |title=El Mal Querer by Rosalía |url=https://www.metacritic.com/music/el-mal-querer/rosalia |language=en |access-date=2022-06-24}} At the 19th Latin Grammy Awards, the single "Malamente" was nominated for five awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Urban Fusion Performance, and Best Alternative Song, winning the latter two. The next year's ceremony, the album won for Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album and Best Recording Package, while the song "Pienso en tu mirá" received a nomination for Best Pop Song.{{cite web|last=|first=|date=21 September 2018|title=19th Latin Grammy Awards Nominations|url=https://www.latingrammy.com/files/19thlatingrammyaward.pdf|access-date=|website=latingrammy.com|archive-date=17 November 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201117161749/https://www.latingrammy.com/files/19thlatingrammyaward.pdf|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url=https://www.latingrammy.com/files/19thlatingrammyaward.pdf|title=19th Latin Grammy Awards Nominations|date=21 September 2018|website=latingrammy.com|access-date=8 September 2021|archive-date=17 November 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201117161749/https://www.latingrammy.com/files/19thlatingrammyaward.pdf|url-status=dead}} Díaz-Reixa received won for Best Engineered Album.
