Energy Security and Net Zero Select Committee

{{Short description|UK House of Commons select committee}}

{{Use dmy dates|date=April 2022}}

The Energy Security and Net Zero Select Committee is a select committee of the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom that came into existence in April 2023. It is the successor to the previous Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, which existed from 2009 to 2016.

Formation

The House of Commons agreed to the establishment of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee on 28 October 2008,[https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmhansrd/cm081028/debtext/81028-0025.htm House of Commons Hansard Debates from 28 Oct 08 - Energy and Climate Change Motion] following the establishment of the Department of Energy and Climate Change on 3 October 2008. The remit of the committee is to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the department, and any departmental bodies.

Reformation

As the department was disbanded and merged with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, to form the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in July 2016, the committee was also abolished.

The committee was revitalised with the formation of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.{{Cite web |date=9 May 2023 |title=New Energy Security and Net Zero Committee to hold stakeholder event in Parliament to help shape scrutiny priorities |url=https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/664/energy-security-and-net-zero-committee/news/195142/new-energy-security-and-net-zero-committee-to-hold-stakeholder-event-in-parliament-to-help-shape-scrutiny-priorities/ |website=UK Parliament}} Candidates for chair were Kirsty Blackman, Stewart Malcolm McDonald and Angus MacNeil.{{Cite web |date=29 March 2023 |title=Chair Nominations Open for Energy Security Net Zero |url=https://www.parliament.uk/external/committees/news/2023/march/chair-nominations-energy-security-net-zero/ |website=UK Parliament}}
