The Indian media has criticised her "fluctuating" accents, in Hindi and English, and attributed her inability to find roles in Bollywood to her dark complexion. Despite these criticisms, Pinto has been credited by the media for having avoided being stereotyped as an Indian in Hollywood, as she often plays characters of other nationalities.{{Cite web |date=5 April 2013 |title=Stereotyping a lesser evil in Indian cinema: Freida Pinto |url=http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/stereotyping-a-lesser-evil-in-indian-cinema-freida-pinto/1/260878.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151004183459/http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/stereotyping-a-lesser-evil-in-indian-cinema-freida-pinto/1/260878.html |archive-date=4 October 2015 |access-date=11 September 2015 |website=India Today}} In a 2012 interview with Hindustan Times, she said she consciously avoids roles that depict stereotypes.{{Cite news |last=Nayar Singh |first=Anjuri |date=18 December 2014 |title=Freida won't play girl who wears sari, bindi |work=Hindustan Times |url=http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/freida-won-t-play-girl-who-wears-sari-bindi/story-0LItHGPKSqoNbp9UMeTxZN.html |url-status=live |access-date=7 December 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208200756/http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/freida-won-t-play-girl-who-wears-sari-bindi/story-0LItHGPKSqoNbp9UMeTxZN.html |archive-date=8 December 2015}}
Pinto balances out her career by working in "big budget Hollywood blockbusters" alongside "smart independent films."
