It has received generally positive reviews from critics, who generally praised the new musical direction but criticised the lack of cohesiveness. The album is notable due to the influence of outside songwriters; not a single song on the album was written without help by the band itself.

Background and recording

The band entered the studio on September 26, 2014 with producer John Feldmann.Bird, ed. 2015, p. 69

All Time Low recruited Mark Hoppus and Joel Madden as guest artists.

"It feels like a definite progression. I wouldn’t say it’s an insane departure or anything like that. We haven’t gone completely the other way and tried all kinds of new things. We’ve certainly tried some new things, but I don’t think it’s necessarily going to alienate anyone or push people away that loved the last record. There’s a lot of stuff that’s in line with Don’t Panic, but there’s a lot of stuff that’s a logical next step from it, too."—vocalist/guitarist Alex Gaskarth.[http://www.rocksound.tv/features/read/alex-gaskarth-as-long-as-we-can-keep-pushing-forward-well-keep-growing-this ALEX GASKARTH: "AS LONG AS WE CAN KEEP PUSHING FORWARD, WE’LL KEEP GROWING THIS THING"] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150118075555/http://www.rocksound.tv/features/read/alex-gaskarth-as-long-as-we-can-keep-pushing-forward-well-keep-growing-this |date=2015-01-18 }} Rock Sound. Maria Sherman of Fuse positively compared "Something's Gotta Give" to Yellowcard, stating it recalled that group's "cinematic songwriting, bridges with gang vocals, technical guitar breakdowns—huge rock and roll stuff!", and acknowledged the "classic All Time Low self-deprecating lyricism".{{cite web | url=http://www.fuse.tv/2015/01/all-time-low-somethings-gotta-give | title=Hear All Time Low's New Single "Something's Gotta Give" | publisher=fuse | date=January 12, 2015 | access-date=January 13, 2015 | author=Sherman, Maria | url-status=live | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150113073610/http://www.fuse.tv/2015/01/all-time-low-somethings-gotta-give | archive-date=January 13, 2015 }}

The album holds a Metacritic score of 74, based on seven reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews". On a highly positive analysis, Thomas Nassiff of Absolutepunk.net stated that "All Time Low has accomplished something more rare than a No. 1 single or a platinum album with Future Hearts -- they've reached one of the most unreachable points for a band from their corner of the world, a point of true lasting value." Writing for Exclaim!, Branan Ranjanathan highlighted the "unashamedly formulaic nature" of the record, further explaining that "there are brief moments where the band let loose, and their ability to write far punchier songs becomes apparent, but many tracks on this album — especially towards the second half — are overproduced to the point that even the highlights are overshadowed."{{cite magazine | url=http://exclaim.ca/Music/article/all_time_low-future_hearts | title=All Time Low - Future Hearts | magazine=Exclaim! | date=April 2, 2015 | access-date=April 9, 2015 | author=Ranjanathan, Branan | url-status=live | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150409044024/http://exclaim.ca/Music/article/all_time_low-future_hearts | archive-date=April 9, 2015 }}
