On October 15, 2019, Rodriguez posted an apology to Instagram for posting a now since-deleted video of herself saying the word "niggas" while singing along to "Ready or Not" by the Fugees, garnering widespread public backlash. Within hours, she posted a second apology on the platform, stating: "The word I sang carries…a legacy of hurt and pain that I cannot even imagine…I feel so deeply protective and responsible to the community of color but I have let this community down. I have some serious learning and growing to do and I am so deeply sorry for the pain that I have caused."{{Cite web |title=Gina Rodriguez apologizes for singing n-word on Instagram

Philanthropy

Rodriguez has been involved with various charities and philanthropic efforts, made possible by her rising visibility as a film and television actress.{{cite news |title=Gina Rodriguez Planning Education Charity With Sisters |url=https://www.contactmusic.com/gina-rodriguez/news/gina-rodriguez-planning-education-charity-with-sisters_4647480 | last=WENN |website=Contactmusic.com | date=23 March 2015}} In 2015, she became involved in Custom Ink and Naja Lingerie, both of which Rodriguez has stated have a special connection to her life and experiences.{{cite press release |title=Custom Ink Teams Up With Gina Rodriguez To Kick Off Its 5th Annual "Be Good to Each Other" Bullying Prevention Campaign |publisher=PR Newswire |url=https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/customink-teams-up-with-gina-rodriguez-to-kick-off-its-5th-annual-be-good-to-each-other-bullying-prevention-campaign-300140855.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208093144/http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/customink-teams-up-with-gina-rodriguez-to-kick-off-its-5th-annual-be-good-to-each-other-bullying-prevention-campaign-300140855.html |archive-date=December 8, 2015}}

On March 16, 2015, she was announced as a member of the board of directors of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the largest non-profit organization in the U.S. that supports Hispanic American higher education. Because attaining an education was the biggest priority in Rodriguez's household, coupled with her determination to work towards a degree, she was able to work towards receiving a HSF scholarship.{{cite press release |title=Actress Gina Rodriguez Joins Hispanic Scholarship Fund Board of Directors |url=https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/actress-gina-rodriguez-joins-hispanic-scholarship-fund-board-of-directors-300050628.html | publisher=PR Newswire |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208150653/http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/actress-gina-rodriguez-joins-hispanic-scholarship-fund-board-of-directors-300050628.html |archive-date=December 8, 2015 | url-status=live}}

Later in 2015, PACER's (The Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights) National Bullying Prevention Center teamed up with Custom Ink and enlisted the help of various celebrities, Rodriguez among them, to raise money for their fifth annual "Be Good to Each Other Campaign". Throughout the month of October 2015, people were encouraged to purchase a celebri-tee from Custom Ink, who donated all the proceeds from bullying prevention T-shirts to PACER.{{Cite web |title=Stop Bullying T-Shirts - Custom Ink's Be Good to Each Other Campaign |url=http://www.customink.com/stopbullying/2015?pc=PR-147031&utm_source=stopbullying&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=stopbullying%25200915&cm_mmc=PR-_-Stopbullying-_-0915-_-0915 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304043827/http://www.customink.com/stopbullying/2015?pc=PR-147031&utm_source=stopbullying&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=stopbullying%25200915&cm_mmc=PR-_-Stopbullying-_-0915-_-0915 |archive-date=March 4, 2016 |accessdate=2015-12-07 |website=Custom Ink}} Rodriguez, in designing a celebri-tee which featured the phrase "Kindness Is Always In Style" in cursive print, took a stand for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in support of bullying prevention, and stated that her parents always taught [her] the power of thinking positively and treating others with respect. She also hopes that through the Be Good to Each Other Campaign, such a message could be continued to be spread to younger generations.{{cite web |title=Custom Ink's 5th Annual Be Good to Each Other |url=https://www.booster.com/ginarodriguez? |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160106230700/https://www.booster.com/ginarodriguez |archive-date=January 6, 2016 |access-date=December 7, 2015 |website=www.booster.com}}

Also in October 2015, Rodriguez was announced as a partner of Naja, a lingerie line founded in 2014 with ambitions to help women and the environment. Because Naja is vertically integrated, thereby shortening manufacturing lead times by up to eighty percent, it allows the company's savings to go towards school books, lunches, and uniforms for employees' children, and there's also an emphasis on a flexible work environment.{{cite web |title=Why Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez Is Entering The Lingerie Business | last=Ilyashov | first=Alexandra|url=https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2015/10/95239/gina-rodriguez-naja-lingerie|website=Refinery29|access-date=December 7, 2015|date=October 6, 2015}} Having seen the hardships of single mothers through a close friend from college, Rodriguez wanted to support a company that primarily employed single mothers and allowed remote work.{{cite web |title=Gina Rodriguez Gives Back As Co Founder Of Naja Lingerie | url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/sboyd/2015/10/07/gina-rodriguez-gives-back-as-co-founder-of-naja-lingerie/ |website=Forbes |access-date=December 7, 2015 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208134553/http://www.forbes.com/sites/sboyd/2015/10/07/gina-rodriguez-gives-back-as-co-founder-of-naja-lingerie/ | archive-date=December 8, 2015 | url-status=live}} She also cites Naja's commitment to creating lingerie for women of all shapes and sizes and encouraging body confidence as a factor for becoming involved with the lingerie line; admitting that it was a process for her to fall in love with her own body, Rodriguez also spoke on the importance of empowering women to love their own bodies and what they wear.{{cite web|title=Gina Rodriguez Teams Up with Lingerie Brand Naja and Shares an Empowering Message for Women |url=http://www.instyle.com/news/gina-rodriguez-partners-naja-lingerie-empowering-message |website=InStyle.com|access-date=December 7, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208124539/http://www.instyle.com/news/gina-rodriguez-partners-naja-lingerie-empowering-message|archive-date=December 8, 2015 |url-status=live}} Naja is also environmentally-conscious in its production, as more than half of all of its pieces are made of synthetics (like nylon)—that have been fabricated from recycled plastic bottles—and makes use of digital printing as a more environmentally friendly measure.

In 2016, Rodriguez was named to Oprah's SuperSoul 100 list of visionaries and influential leaders.{{cite news |date=August 1, 2016 |title=Meet the SuperSoul100: The World's Biggest Trailblazers in One Room |url=http://www.oprah.com/spirit/supersoul100-the-worlds-biggest-trailblazers-in-one-room |work=O Magazine |access-date=July 5, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180705180050/http://www.oprah.com/spirit/supersoul100-the-worlds-biggest-trailblazers-in-one-room |archive-date=July 5, 2018 |url-status=live }} In 2017, Rodriguez, among several other artists, sang on the single "Almost Like Praying".
