Early life

Schlitt was born in Wiesbaden in the Duchy of Nassau, what would now be in the modern day German state of Hesse. His father was a member of the court of the Duke of Nassau, working as a coachman. After the Prussian annexation of the Duchy, Schlitt joined the Dutch military, a choice thought to be the result of the Schlitt family moving to the Netherlands with the rest of the exiled Duchy.

Schlitt was a student of Kaspar Kögler at his school in Wiesbaden. In 1875, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger.{{Cite book|last=|first=|url=https://matrikel.adbk.de/matrikel/mb_1841-1884/jahr_1875/matrikel-03155|title=03155 Heinrich Schlitt|work=Matrikelbuch|publisher=Academy of Fine Arts, Munich|year=1884|isbn=|volume=2|location=|pages=}} He exhibited his works at exhibitions put on by the Munich Artists' Cooperative.{{Cite book|last=|first=|url=https://archive.org/details/illustrirterkata00muen/page/n62/mode/1up|title=Münchener Jahres-ausstellung|publisher=Franz Hanfstaengl|year=1894|isbn=|location=Munich|pages=41}}{{Cite book|last=|first=|url=https://archive.org/details/offiziellerkatal1903munc/page/95/mode/1up|title=Münchener Jahres-Ausstellung Glaspalast|publisher=Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft|year=1903|isbn=|location=Munich|pages=95}}
