Hughesdale railway station is a commuter railway station on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines, part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the south-eastern suburb of Murrumbeena, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It opened on 28 February 1925, with the current station being provided in 2018.{{cite web |url=http://www.vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Hughesdale |title=Hughesdale |website=vicsig.net |access-date=21 January 2023 |archive-date=10 December 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221210111657/https://vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Hughesdale |url-status=live}}
History
Like the adjoining suburb, Hughesdale station was named in honour of James Vincent Hughes, mayor of Oakleigh from 1924 to 1925. He, with the Poath Road Railway Station League, had lobbied strongly for a new station for the area.{{cite news |title=Station at Poath Road |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/1897214/427617 |access-date=28 February 2023 |work=The Argus |date=5 January 1924 |via=Trove |archive-date=28 February 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230228120640/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/1897214/427617 |url-status=live }} Before the station was built, Hughesdale was the site of the junctions of both the Outer Circle and Rosstown lines with the Dandenong/Gippsland line.
In 1972, boom barriers replaced hand gates at the former Poath Road level crossing, which was at the up end of the former ground-level station.{{cite magazine |date=January 1990 |title=Level Crossing Protection |first=John |last=Sinnatt |magazine=Somersault |publisher=Signalling Record Society Victoria |pages=9–17}}
In 1977, the former ground-level station building was rebuilt, after the original station building, which was of a timber construction, was destroyed by fire in 1975.{{cite magazine |date=August 1977 |title=Works |magazine=Newsrail |publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society (Victorian Division) |page=183}}{{cite magazine |date=January 1976 |title=Works & Safeworking | magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society (Victorian Division) |page=18}}
In 2016, the Level Crossing Removal Authority announced a grade separation project to eliminate the Poath Road level crossing immediately to the west of the station. On 14 October 2017, the station was closed, and was demolished on 28 October of that year. On 25 August 2018, the rebuilt station opened about {{convert|250|m}} west of the former station, as part of construction of the new section of elevated rail line between Caulfield and Oakleigh. Consequently, the station is now located in the suburb of Murrumbeena rather than Hughesdale. {{Cite web |title = Cranbourne/Pakenham lines: Hughesdale Station opened today, Saturday 25 August |url = https://twitter.com/metrotrains/status/1033132194389053440 |access-date = 25 August 2018 |archive-date = 14 December 2022 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20221214171434/https://twitter.com/metrotrains/status/1033132194389053440 |url-status = live}}
