AllMusic rated In the Mode four stars out of five, though reviewer John Bush noted that "the highlights are over far too quickly, and the weaker tracks never should have appeared in the first place." Marc Savlov, writing for The Austin Chronicle, awarded the album three stars out of five saying that it was "packed to bursting with arcane beats and skittery jungle rhythms" but remarked that it was "not so much out of date as it is out of time."{{cite web|last=Savlov|first=Marc|title=Review: Roni Size & Reprazent|url=http://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2000-12-29/79980/|work=The Austin Chronicle|accessdate=10 June 2013|date=29 December 2000}} The A.V. Club's Joshua Klein described In the Mode as "another volley of stylish drum-and-bass", though he noted that it "suffers a bit from overkill."{{cite web|last=Klein|first=Joshua|title=Roni Size & Reprazent: In The Mode|url=https://www.avclub.com/articles/roni-size-reprazent-in-the-mode,21961/|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130615214648/http://www.avclub.com/articles/roni-size-reprazent-in-the-mode,21961/|url-status=dead|archive-date=15 June 2013|work=The A.V. Vibe writer Jon Caramanica opined that In the Mode "just regurgitates old forms" and rated the album two and a half stars out of five.{{cite book|last=Caramanica|first=Jon|title=Vibe|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=7icEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA207|date=December 2000|publisher=Vibe Media Group|pages=207–|issn=1070-4701}} Robert Christgau, writing for The Village Voice, gave the album an A rating, noting that "the album moves the way you always hope jungle will, like a cross between a tiger and a snake."
