Career
Gilbert's musical career began with his first band Mothra in Birmingham, Alabama. Shortly after, they changed their name to This Endearing,{{Cite web|url=https://alabamadiymusicarchive.bandcamp.com/album/this-endearing|title=This Endearing, by This Endearing|website=Alabama DIY Music Archive|access-date=May 29, 2019}} and sent a demo to Tim Lambesis, frontman of As I Lay Dying. This Endearing disbanded in 2006 and Gilbert went on to join As I Lay Dying.{{cite web| title=What happened to Clint and who's the new guy?|publisher=asilaydying.com|date=August 3, 2007|url=http://www.asilaydying.com/about.html|accessdate=November 3, 2016|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080123084739/http://www.asilaydying.com/about.html|archivedate=January 23, 2008}}{{cite web|url=http://www.daytimenews.com/feeds/10616.html|title=An Ocean Between Us As I Lay Dying|publisher=Day Time News|author=necrophaige|accessdate=November 3, 2016}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/as-i-lay-dying-frontman-explains-bassist-change/|title=AS I LAY DYING Frontman Explains Bassist Change|publisher=Blabbermouth.net|date=August 3, 2007|accessdate=November 3, 2016}} Gilbert was As I Lay Dying's bassist from 2006 until 2014, when Lambesis was arrested. Before Lambesis' arrest, Gilbert performed in two of Lambesis' side-projects, Austrian Death Machine and Pyrithion. For the Pyrithion EP, Gilbert contributed bass as a session musician as well as JP Andrade on drums, with the official members being, Lambesis, Ryan Glissen (formerly of Allegaeon), and Andrew Godwin (formerly of Embodyment and The Famine). With Austrian Death Machine, Gilbert performed vocals on the two albums, Total Brutal and Double Brutal, and performed bass for the live band.
After Lambesis' arrest, the remaining members of AILD, guitarists Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso, and drummer Jordan Mancino formed Wovenwar.{{cite web|url=http://www.metalinjection.net/av/as-i-lay-dying-members-are-working-on-new-music-without-tim-lambesis|title=AS I LAY DYING Members Are Working On New Music Without Tim Lambesis|publisher=Metal Injection|first=Robert|last=Pasbani|date=April 4, 2014|accessdate=November 3, 2016}} It was assumed that Gilbert was originally the vocalist, though it was later discovered that though he was, the primary vocalist was Shane Blay.{{cite web|url=http://www.metalinjection.net/shocking-revelations/as-i-lay-dying-is-sleeping-rather-than-dead-according-to-new-lengthy-band-statement|title=AS I LAY DYING Is 'Sleeping Rather Than Dead' According to New Lengthy Band Statement|publisher=Metal Injection|first=Robert|last=Pasbani|date=April 9, 2014|accessdate=November 3, 2016}} After AILD went on hiatus, the band was approached by Brian Slagel, Metal Blade Records owner.{{cite web|url=http://www.stormbringer.at/interviews/1693/interview-wovenwar.html|title=Wovenwar – Josh Gilbert|publisher=Stormbringer.at|first=Robert|last=Fröwein|date=May 27, 2015|accessdate=November 3, 2016|language=German}} The band has released two albums, Wovenwar (2014) and Honor Is Dead (2016).
Lambesis spent time in prison during Wovenwar's original run, and was released from prison in December 2016. After several meetings among the band members, Gilbert and his bandmates re-formed As I Lay Dying. Gilbert's reunion with the band was short-lived, as he made a final exit from the group on May 16, 2022, after creating only one album in their reunion.{{Cite web |date=May 16, 2022 |title=AS I LAY DYING Parts Ways With Longtime Bassist/Vocalist JOSH GILBERT |url=https://blabbermouth.net/news/as-i-lay-dying-parts-ways-with-longtime-bassist-vocalist-josh-gilbert |access-date=May 17, 2022}} Less than a week later, it was announced that he would be filling in as bassist for Spiritbox during their 2022 shows.{{cite news |author= |date=May 22, 2022 |title=Spiritbox Parts Ways With Bassist Bill Crook |url=https://blabbermouth.net/news/spiritbox-parts-ways-with-bassist-bill-crook |url-status=live |work=Blabbermouth.net |archive-url=https://archive.today/20220522182639/https://blabbermouth.net/news/spiritbox-parts-ways-with-bassist-bill-crook |archive-date=May 22, 2022 |access-date=May 22, 2022}} It was announced he had joined the band full-time on April 12, 2023.{{cite web |last1=Enis |first1=Eli |title=Spiritbox confirm new official bassist |url=https://www.revolvermag.com/music/spiritbox-confirm-new-official-bassist |website=Revolver |access-date=April 13, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230413160801/https://www.revolvermag.com/music/spiritbox-confirm-new-official-bassist |archive-date=April 13, 2023 |date=April 13, 2023}}
