The Baltimore Orioles are a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise based in Baltimore, Maryland. They play in the American League East division. Since the institution of MLB's Rule 4 Draft, the Orioles have selected 60 players in the first round. Officially known as the "First-Year Player Draft", the Rule 4 Draft is MLB's primary mechanism for assigning amateur baseball players from high schools, colleges, and other amateur baseball clubs to its teams. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick.{{cite web|url=http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jsp|title=First-Year Player Draft Rules|work=MLB.com|publisher=Major League Baseball|access-date=July 2, 2010|archive-date=June 5, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110605131548/http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jsp|url-status=live}} In addition, teams which lost free agents in the previous off-season may be awarded compensatory or supplementary picks.{{cite web|url=http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081126&content_id=3694740&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil&partnerId=rss_mil|title=Brewers offer three arbitration|last=McCalvy|first=Adam|work=Brewers.MLB.com|publisher=Milwaukee Brewers|access-date=July 2, 2010|archive-date=June 29, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110629194617/http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081126&content_id=3694740&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil&partnerId=rss_mil|url-status=live}}
Of the 60 players picked in the first round by Baltimore, 30 have been pitchers, the most of any position; 21 of them were right-handed, while 9 were left-handed. Twelve outfielders, eight shortstops, seven catchers, two third basemen, and one second basemen were also taken. The team has never drafted a player at first base.{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=BAL&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&|title=Baltimore Orioles 1st Round Picks in the MLB June Amateur Draft|work=Baseball-Reference.com|publisher=Sports Reference, LLC|access-date=January 31, 2011|archive-date=October 14, 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101014145049/http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&draft_type=junreg&team_ID=BAL&draft_round=1&|url-status=live}} 16 of the players came from high schools or universities in the state of California, and Florida follows with five players. The Orioles have also drafted two players from Canada, Ntema Ndungidi (1997) and Adam Loewen (2002). The Orioles have not drafted any players from their home state of Maryland.
Two players have won a championship with the team; Bobby Grich (1967), who was a part of the 1970 World Series championship team, and Rich Dauer (1974), who was a part of the 1983 World Series championship team.{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grichbo01.shtml|title=Bobby Grich Statistics and History|access-date=February 11, 2011|work=Baseball-Reference.com|publisher=Sports Reference, LLC|archive-date=March 3, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220303095050/https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grichbo01.shtml|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dauerri01.shtml|title=Rich Dauer Statistics and History|access-date=February 11, 2011|work=Baseball-Reference.com|publisher=Sports Reference, LLC|archive-date=April 30, 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110430111407/http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dauerri01.shtml|url-status=live}} Mike Mussina (1990) is the only of the Orioles' first-round picks to have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jayson Werth (1997) was originally drafted as a catcher, but was converted to a right fielder, and primarily plays that position in the major leagues.{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/werthja01.shtml|title=Jayson Werth Statistics and History|work=Baseball-Reference.com|publisher=Sports Reference, LLC|access-date=February 11, 2011|archive-date=November 3, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211103081525/https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/werthja01.shtml|url-status=live}}
The Orioles have made 11 selections in the supplemental round of the draft and six compensatory picks since the institution of the First-Year Player Draft in 1965. They received the 28th pick in 1988 and the 48th pick in 2005 for failing to sign DuVall and Townsend, respectively, as compensation.

- {{note label|Value|V|V}} Through the 2012 draft, free agents were evaluated by the Elias Sports Bureau and rated "Type A", "Type B", or not compensation-eligible. If a team offered arbitration to a player but that player refused and subsequently signed with another team, the original team was able to receive additional draft picks. If a "Type A" free agent left in this way, his previous team received a supplemental pick and a compensatory pick from the team with which he signed. If a "Type B" free agent left in this way, his previous team received only a supplemental pick. Since the 2013 draft, free agents are no longer classified by type; instead, compensatory picks are only awarded if the team offered its free agent a contract worth at least the average of the 125 current richest MLB contracts.{{cite news |url=https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/7269300/major-league-baseball-players-owners-sign-new-labor-agreement |title=MLB players, owners sign agreement |work=ESPN.com |date=November 23, 2011 |access-date=November 23, 2011 |archive-date=November 23, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111123185025/http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7269300/major-league-baseball-players-owners-sign-new-labor-agreement |url-status=live }} However, if the free agent's last team acquired the player in a trade during the last year of his contract, it is ineligible to receive compensatory picks for that player.{{cite news |url=https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/7270203/baseball-new-labor-deal-truly-historic-one |title=How the new CBA changes baseball |first=Jayson |last=Stark |author-link=Jayson Stark |work=ESPN.com |date=November 22, 2011 |access-date=November 23, 2011 |archive-date=November 24, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111124225428/http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7270203/baseball-new-labor-deal-truly-historic-one |url-status=live }}
