A hat-trick in cricket is when a bowler takes three wickets on consecutive deliveries, dismissing three different batsmen. It is a relatively rare event in One Day International (ODI) cricket with only 50 occurrences in 4546 matches since the first ODI match between Australia and England on 5 January 1971. The first ODI hat-trick was taken by Pakistan's Jalal-ud-Din against Australia in Hyderabad, Sindh, in September 1982. The most recent player to achieve this feat is Maheesh Theekshana of Sri Lanka against New Zealand in January 2025.

The only bowler to have taken three ODI hat-tricks is Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga. Five other bowlers{{emdash}} Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq, Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas, New Zealand's Trent Boult and India's Kuldeep Yadav{{emdash}}have taken two hat-tricks in the format. Vaas is the first and only bowler to claim a hat-trick on the first three balls of any form of international cricket; he achieved the feat against Bangladesh during the 2003 World Cup. Malinga is the only player to claim four wickets in consecutive balls; he achieved the feat against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup. Four players have taken a hat-trick on their ODI debuts: Bangladesh's Taijul Islam against Zimbabwe in 2014,{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/dec/01/bangladesh-taijul-islam-first-bowler-hat-trick-odi-debut-zimbabwe|title=Bangladesh's Tailjul Islam first bowler to take hat-trick on ODI debut|work=The Guardian|publisher=theguardian.com|date=1 December 2014|access-date=4 January 2015}} South Africa's Kagiso Rabada against Bangladesh in 2015,{{cite web|url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/bangladesh-v-south-africa-2015/engine/match/817207.html|title=South Africa tour of Bangladesh, 1st ODI: Bangladesh v South Africa at Dhaka, Jul 10, 2015|publisher=Cricinfo|access-date=10 July 2015|archive-date=10 July 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150710210254/http://www.espncricinfo.com/bangladesh-v-south-africa-2015/engine/match/817207.html|url-status=live}} Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga against Zimbabwe in 2017,{{cite web |url=http://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/sri-lanka-vs-zimbabwe-2nd-odi-wanidu-hasaranga-becomes-youngest-player-to-take-hat-trick-on-debut-4731672/ |title=Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe, 2nd ODI: Wanidu Hasaranga becomes youngest player to take hat-trick on debut |date=2 July 2017 |publisher=Indian Express |access-date=2 July 2017 |archive-date=4 July 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170704182622/http://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/sri-lanka-vs-zimbabwe-2nd-odi-wanidu-hasaranga-becomes-youngest-player-to-take-hat-trick-on-debut-4731672/ |url-status=live }} and Sri Lanka's Shehan Madushanka against Bangladesh in 2018.{{cite news |last=Scott |first=Matthew |title=Shehan Madushanka's debut hat-trick helps Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, clinch tri-series title |url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/shehan-madushanka-s-debut-hat-trick-helps-sri-lanka-beat-bangladesh-clinch-tri-series-title/story-ERYNPYQYPACpZf4nBPbVlO.html |work=Hindustan Times |date=27 January 2018 |access-date=15 September 2019 |archive-date=8 February 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180208072813/https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/shehan-madushanka-s-debut-hat-trick-helps-sri-lanka-beat-bangladesh-clinch-tri-series-title/story-ERYNPYQYPACpZf4nBPbVlO.html |url-status=dead }} India's Chetan Sharma was the first cricketer to take a hat-trick in a World Cup match.
