History

The first iSchools Caucus was formed in 1988 by Syracuse,{{cite book |last1=Liddy |first1=Elizabeth D. |author1-link=Liz Liddy |chapter=iSchools & the iSchool at Syracuse University |title=Library and Information Sciences: Trends and Research |date=2014 |pages=31–37 |doi=10.1007/978-3-642-54812-3_4 |chapter-url=https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-642-54812-3_4 |access-date=23 May 2024 |publisher=Springer Nature |isbn=978-3-642-54811-6 |language=en}} Pittsburgh, and Drexel and was called the Gang of Three (sometimes gang of four with Rutgers).{{cite web| title= iSchools Origins|url =http://www.ischools.org/history/origins/ |access-date = 2011-07-11|url-status=dead|archive-url =https://web.archive.org/web/20110718234459/http://www.ischools.org/history/origins/ |archive-date = 2011-07-18}}{{cite journal |last1=Shu |first1=Fei |last2=Mongeon |first2=Phillippe |title=The evolution of iSchool movement (1988-2013): A bibliometric view |journal=Education for Information |date=24 November 2016 |volume=32 |issue=4 |pages=359–373 |doi=10.3233/EFI-160982 |url=https://eric.ed.gov/?id=EJ1121966 |access-date=23 May 2024}} Syracuse renamed the School of Library Science as the School of Information Studies in 1974, and is considered as the first “iSchool” in history.{{rp|366}} The group was formally named "the iSchools Caucus" or more casually, the iCaucus. By 2003, the group expanded to include the Universities of Michigan, Washington, Illinois, UNC, Florida State, Indiana, and Texas, and was called the Gang of Ten.{{cite journal |last1=Chakrabarti |first1=Abhijit |last2=Mandal |first2=Sukumar |title=The iSchools: A Study |journal=Library Philosophy and Practice (E-journal) |date=3 July 2017 |url=https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/libphilprac/1537/ |access-date=23 May 2024 |issn=1522-0222}}{{cite journal |last1=Dillon |first1=Andrew |title=What it Means to be an iSchool |journal=Journal of Education for Library and Information Science |date=2012 |volume=53 |issue=4 |pages=267–273 |jstor=43686920 |url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/43686920 |access-date=23 May 2024 |issn=0748-5786}}

iSchools organization

The iSchools promote an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the opportunities and challenges of information management, with a core commitment to concepts like universal access and user-centered organization of information. The field is concerned broadly with questions of design and preservation across information spaces, from digital and virtual spaces such as online communities, social networking, the World Wide Web, and databases to physical spaces such as libraries, museums, collections, and other repositories. "School of Information", "Department of Information Studies", or "Information Department" are often the names of the participating organizations.{{cite book |last1=Larsen |first1=Ronald L. |title=Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences |date=2009 |publisher=CRC Press |isbn=978-0-203-75763-5 |edition=3 |url=https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.1081/E-ELIS3-120043670/ischools-ronald-larsen |access-date=23 May 2024 |archive-url=https://d-scholarship.pitt.edu/5852/ |archive-date=5 May 2011 |language=en |chapter=iSchools|pages=3018–3023 |doi=10.1081/E-ELIS3-120043670 }}{{cite journal |title=Overview of the iSchool Movement: An Interview with Ronald L.
