Kent is a county in the south-eastern corner of England. It is bounded to the north by Greater London and the Thames Estuary, to the west by Sussex and Surrey, and to the south and east by the English Channel and the North Sea. The county town is Maidstone.{{cite web|url=https://www.britannica.com/place/Kent-county-England|title=Kent|publisher=Encyclopedia Britannica|access-date=15 May 2018|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180422234912/https://www.britannica.com/place/Kent-county-England|archive-date=22 April 2018}} It is governed by Kent County Council, with twelve district councils, Ashford, Canterbury, Dartford, Dover, Folkestone and Hythe, Gravesham, Maidstone, Thanet, Tonbridge and Malling and Tunbridge Wells. Medway is a separate unitary authority.{{cite web|url=http://www.kent.gov.uk/about-the-council/how-the-council-works/district-councils|title=District councils|publisher=Kent County Council|access-date=15 May 2018|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171027135727/http://www.kent.gov.uk/about-the-council/how-the-council-works/district-councils|archive-date=27 October 2017}}{{cite web | title = Council and democracy | publisher=Kent County Council | url = http://www.kent.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/ | access-date =19 April 2007 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20070206185542/http://www.kent.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/ |archive-date = 6 February 2007}} The chalk hills of the North Downs run from east to west through the county, with the wooded Weald to the south. The coastline is alternately flat and cliff-lined.

Local nature reserves are designated by local authorities under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. The local authority must have legal control over the site, by owning or leasing it or having an agreement with the owner. Local nature reserves are sites which have a special local interest either biologically or geologically. Local authorities have a duty to care for them and can apply local bye-laws to manage and protect them.{{cite web|url=https://www.gov.uk/protected-or-designated-areas|title=Protected or Designated Areas|date=9 April 2013|publisher=Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and Natural England|access-date=29 July 2015|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150504145328/https://www.gov.uk/protected-or-designated-areas|archive-date=4 May 2015}}{{cite web|url=https://www.gov.uk/create-and-manage-local-nature-reserves|title=Local Nature Reserves: Setting up and Management|date=2 October 2014|publisher=Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and Natural England|access-date=29 July 2015|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150704111109/https://www.gov.uk/create-and-manage-local-nature-reserves|archive-date=4 July 2015}}
