She was en route from Hobsons Bay, Victoria, to London carrying passengers, plus a cargo of wool, hides, and some 2,576 ounces of gold. Sixty-eight of those aboard (55 passengers and 13 crew) were lost. The remaining crew and passengers were marooned on the Auckland Islands for over a year and a half, and several of them did not survive the ordeal. They survivors were finally rescued by the whaling brig Amherst ({{Flagicon|United Kingdom}} New Zealand) in November 1867.
