Syd Barrett (1946–2006) was an English musician who recorded 37 songs during his short two-year solo career. One of the founding members of English rock band Pink Floyd, he was the dominant force in their early years, writing the majority of the material on their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,{{sfn|Di Perna|Kitts|Tolinski|2002|p=7}} contributing to their second, A Saucerful of Secrets,{{cite web |url=https://www.allmusic.com/album/a-saucerful-of-secrets-mw0000650632 |title=A Saucerful of Secrets – Pink Floyd|last=Unterberger |first=Richie |author-link=Richie Unterberger|work=AllMusic |access-date=2 November 2017}} and recording several unreleased songs with them.{{cite web|last1=Young|first1=Alex|title=Pink Floyd announce new 27-disc boxset featuring seven hours of unreleased music|url=https://consequenceofsound.net/2016/07/pink-floyd-announce-new-27-disc-boxset-featuring-seven-hours-of-unreleased-music/|website=Consequence of Sound|access-date=16 November 2017|date=28 July 2016}} As a result of Barrett's increasing mental illness, guitarist David Gilmour was hired as his possible replacement.{{sfn|Palacios|2010|p=318}}{{sfn|Povey|2008|p=47}} When his condition worsened, he was officially excluded from Pink Floyd in April 1968.{{sfn|Schaffner|1991|pp=107–108}} After his departure, Barrett recorded two solo albums, both released in 1970,{{cite web|last=Unterberger |first=Richie |url=https://www.allmusic.com/album/barrett-mw0000651465 |title=Barrett – Syd Barrett|work=AllMusic |access-date=2 November 2017}} until he left the music business in 1972.{{sfn|Palacios|2010|p=400}}

Barrett returned to the studio in 1969 to begin work on his first solo album, The Madcap Laughs.
