Marie-Françoise André (born 1953 in Paris) is a French geographer and geomorphologist specialising in landscape architecture in the polar regions (Labrador, Spitsbergen, Lapland, Antarctica). She also researched stone erosion in the context of heritage preservation, particularly in Angkor. Her work was awarded the silver medal from CNRS, the French national centre for scientific research.
Biography
André completed her third-cycle thesis on the geomorphological evolution of Northern Labrador in 1981.{{Cite journal |last=André |first=Marie-Françoise |date=1981 |title=Le bourrelet du Labrador : Morphologie continentale et sédimentation bordière |url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/htn_0018-439x_1981_num_3_1_1770 |journal=Hommes et Terres du Nord |language=fr |volume=3 |issue=1 |pages=1–12 |doi=10.3406/htn.1981.1770 |issn=0018-439X}} Her state doctoral thesis was focused on the evolution of slopes in Spitsbergen. Advised by Alain Godard, she defended the thesis in 1991.{{Cite web |title=Les dynamiques spatio-temporelles d'un petit hydrosystème arctique : approche nivo-glaciologique dans un contexte de changement climatique contemporain (bassin du glacier Austre Lovén, Spitsberg, 79°N) |url=http://www.theses.fr/028604350 |access-date=2021-03-11 |website=theses.fr}}.
A teacher-researcher in geomorphology, she was a member of CNRS's URA 1562 team in Clermont-Ferrand in 1993. That same year, she joined the newly founded Physical and Environmental Geography Laboratory (GEOLAB) in the same year.{{Cite web |title=Site web de la BNF |url=https://data.bnf.fr/fr/12040646/marie-francoise_andre/ |access-date=2021-03-11}}. She was director of GEOLAB for nine years, from 1998-2007.
She studied landscape changes over time and the influence of climatic variations in Swedish Lapland and the Antarctic Peninsula. She also published epistemological work on geomorphology {{Cite journal |last=André |first=Marie-Françoise |date=2002 |title=La recherche française en géomorphologie : état des lieux et pistes de réflexion (Recent trends in French geomorphology) |url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/bagf_0004-5322_2002_num_79_1_2251 |journal=Bulletin de l'Association de Géographes Français |volume=79 |issue=1 |pages=15–27 |doi=10.3406/bagf.2002.2251 |access-date=2021-03-11}} and French research on the poles.{{Cite journal |last=André |first=Marie-Françoise |date=2003 |title=Arctique-Antarctique : tendances actuelles de la recherche géographique française (Recent trends in french polar geographical research) |url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/bagf_0004-5322_2003_num_80_4_2342 |journal=Bulletin de l'Association de Géographes Français |volume=80 |issue=4 |pages=343–348 |doi=10.3406/bagf.2003.2342 |access-date=2021-03-11}}
She lectured at the University of Limoges in 1994. From 1997-2016 she was a professor of geography at Blaise Pascal University.{{Cite web |title=Marie-Francoise André |url=https://geolab.uca.fr/annuaire/marie-francoise-andre |access-date=2022-01-21 |website=Laboratoire de Géographie Physique et Environnementale}}.
In the 2010s, André conducted research on stone erosion in historic monuments.{{Cite journal |last=André |first=Marie-Françoise |date=July 2011 |title=Detecting and predicting climate effects on cultural stone deterioration |url=https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01116005 |journal=Scientific Computing and Cultural Heritage |access-date=2021-03-11}} As part of the multidisciplinary Ta Keo project in Angkor her team used photogrammetry and geomatics to demonstrate deforestation had contributed to the temple's deterioration.{{Cite journal |last1=André |first1=Marie-Françoise |last2=Warscheid |first2=Thomas |date=2012 |title=The protective role of trees and biofilms in the Angkor archaeological park and related heritage sites |url=https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01116059 |journal=International Co-ordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor |publisher=UNESCO |pages=46–48 |access-date=2021-03-11}}{{Cite journal |last1=André |first1=Marie-Françoise |last2=Mercier |first2=Denis |last3=Étienne |first3=Samuel |last4=Voldoire |first4=Olivier |date=2008 |title=Approche géographique de l'érosion des temples d'Angkor : enjeux et perspectives (Geographical approach of the Angkor temple degradation : current issues and prospect) |url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/bagf_0004-5322_2008_num_85_1_2603 |journal=Bulletin de l'Association de Géographes Français |volume=85 |issue=1 |pages=105–117 |doi=10.3406/bagf.2008.2603 |access-date=2021-03-11}} For work on the degradation of monuments, as well as developing links between geomorphology and heritage,{{Citation |last1=André |first1=Marie-Françoise |title=Géomorphologie et patrimoine. |date=2013 |work=Géomorphologie de la France |pages=201–214 |editor-last=Mercier |editor-first=Denis |url=https://hal.science/hal-01115114 |access-date=2024-03-02 |publisher=Dunod |last2=Ambert |first2=Martine |last3=Delannoy |first3=Jean-Jacques |last4=Hoblea |first4=Fabien |last5=Reynard |first5=Emmanuel}} she was awarded a silver medal from CNRS.{{Cite web |last=CNRS |date=2011 |title=Médailles d'argent du CNRS - Les lauréats 2011 |url=http://www.cnrs.fr/fr/recherche/prix/docs/argent2011/AndreMF.pdf |access-date=2014-02-05 |website=cnrs.fr}}.
