Mes courants électriques (English: "My Electric Currents") is the second studio album by the French singer Alizée, released on 18 March 2003 through Polydor. The album was produced by Laurent Boutonnat and Mylène Farmer. The album's lyrics, written by Mylène Farmer, incorporate poetic language and subtle elements of melancholy, addressing recurring themes such as emotional longing, romantic desire, and personal reflection. The music, composed by Laurent Boutonnat, features a blend of electronic and pop influences, characterized by atmospheric arrangements and polished production. This electro-pop aesthetic marks a stylistic shift from Alizée's earlier work, reflecting an evolution in her sound and artistic direction.

Upon release, the album attained critical and commercial success. Critically, the album was noted for its blend of pop and electronic elements, with reviewers highlighting Alizée's vocal growth and the playful yet ironic tone of her performances. Commercially, the album fared well, although it failed to repeat the universal and critical success of its predecessor, Gourmandises (2000). In France, the album debuted at number two on the SNEP Albums Chart and remained on the chart for over 25 weeks, quickly earning a double gold certification from SNEP for sales surpassing 400,000 copies. The album was also well-received in other European markets, including Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany, where it charted within the top 20. In Japan, where Alizée had cultivated a passionate fanbase, the album saw notable success, reaching the top 15 on the Oricon International Albums chart. Its unique blend of French pop and electro-pop, along with Alizée's growing international profile, helped the album perform especially well in non-Francophone countries.

The album featured three singles. The lead single, "J'en ai marre!" (released as "I'm fed up!" in some territories), emerging as a standout hit, peaked at number four on the French Singles Chart and earning a gold certification from the Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP) for sales exceeding 250,000 copies. Its appeal extended internationally, reaching number two in Japan and charting within the top 30 in countries like Belgium, Germany, and Italy. The second single, "J'ai pas vingt ans" (released as "I'm not twenty!" in other territories), continued the album's momentum, securing the 17th position on the French Singles Chart and achieving notable placements in other European countries, including a peak at number three on Poland's airplay chart. The third single, "À contre-courant", released in October 2003, added to the album's success, peaking at number 22 in France and charting in Belgium and Switzerland.

In support of this album, Alizée embarked on the En concert Tour. It took place in 2003 and served as her first official concert tour, supporting both of her studio albums at the time: Gourmandises (2000) and Mes courants électriques (2003). The tour showcased Alizée's evolution from a teen pop sensation into a more polished electro-pop artist, incorporating songs from both albums into an energetic setlist. With stops across France and select dates in Belgium and Switzerland, the tour featured live renditions of fan favorites like "Moi... Lolita", "J'en ai marre!" and "J'ai pas vingt ans". Known for its sleek choreography and vibrant staging, En Concert helped solidify Alizée's presence as a captivating live performer. The tour concluded with the release of a live album and DVD, Alizée en concert, giving fans an inside look into the production and atmosphere of her shows.

Background and composition

On 21 November 2000, Alizée released her debut album, "Gourmandises" (2000) in France, and released the album internationally on 13 March 2001. }}When the album was released, the album received positive reviews. One review written by Michael McCarthy for Lollipop Magazine states that the album, "Alizée's voice still sounds as sweet and youthful as it did on Gourmandises... but there exists a nice progression between the two albums. There are little things she does with her voice on Mes Courants Electriques that show her growth as a singer."{{Cite web |last=Admin |date=2003-07-23 |title=Alizée – Mes Courants Electriques – Review {{!}} Lollipop Magazine |url=https://lollipopmagazine.com/2003/07/alizee-mes-courants-electriques-review/ |access-date=2025-04-13 |language=en}}

The writer also comments on some songs, saying that, "The first single, "J'en ai marre!," translates to "I'm Fed Up!" in English, yet she sings it playfully, as if she's having a great time, merely being sarcastic. Which makes sense, since the lyrics would seem to be about forgetting her troubles in a bubble bath... Easier to understand is "Amélie m'a dit," which would seem to be a nice homage to the movie of the same name that translates as "Amélie Told Me"".

Another review from the website Laut.de describes the album as, "With "Mes Courants Electriques," Alizée delivers her second full-length album, on time within two years. As expected, it features tame, French summer pop with a "bewitchingly light touch." There's not much more to say about it. Except perhaps that the editorial consensus forecast calls for a chart placement in the top 30."{{Cite web |title=Handzahmer, französischer Sommersonnenpop. |url=https://laut.de/Alizee/Alben/Mes-Courants-Electriques-4460 |access-date=2025-04-29 |website=laut.de |language=de}}

Release and promotion

For the promotion of the album, Alizée traveled around the world performing in different places.

After the success of Gourmandises, the singer returned to France to promote her second studio album. The first single extracted from the album was "J'en ai marre!", officially released in February 2003. The single was made available in music stores as well as radio stations. To promote the single, Alizée appeared on the French radio station NRJ.https://unpeudetout.net/files/Alizee/Articles%20and%20Text/Alizee_Bible_completed_v3%5B1%5D.pdf The video for the single was released for broadcast in March, though it was made available on MTV and many other TV channels. It was released on physical media, both CD and vinyl, in the same month.{{cite web |date=18 March 2003 |title=Alizée – Mes Courants Electriques... In early 2003, prior to the official release of Alizée's second studio album Mes courants électriques, the English version of her lead single, titled "I'm Fed Up!" (known as "Mon bain de mousse" in Japan),{{Cite web |title=Alizee |url=https://sound.jp/alizee/gallery2.html |access-date=2025-04-16 |website=sound.jp}} was leaked online approximately a month before the album's scheduled debut.{{Cite web |title=Alizee America Forums |url=https://alizeeamerica.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8333 |access-date=13 April 2025 |website=Alizee America}} Although the specific track wasn't named, a press release confirmed the leak and provided details about the album's title and release timeline.
