During the Solberg government, the ministry was called the Ministry of Local Government and Modernisation. This was created by merging the ongoing ministry with the Ministry of Government Administration, Reform and Church Affairs and the planning department in the Ministry of the Environment. The ministry adopted its current name on 1 January 2022.{{cite web |url=https://www.regjeringen.no/no/aktuelt/endringer-i-departementsstrukturen-og-i-ansvarsdelingen-mellom-departementene/id2893284/ |title=Endringer i departementsstrukturen og i ansvarsdelingen mellom departementene |date=22 December 2021 |publisher=Office of the Prime Minister |url-status= |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221208125852/https://www.regjeringen.no/no/aktuelt/endringer-i-departementsstrukturen-og-i-ansvarsdelingen-mellom-departementene/id2893284/ |archive-date=8 December 2022 |access-date=30 June 2023 |language=no |trans-title=Changes in the ministry structure and in the division of responsibilities between the ministries }}
