History
Moreland station opened when the railway line from North Melbourne was extended to Coburg.
The name Moreland has been associated with the local area since 1839 when land speculator Farquhar McCrae acquired 638 acres of land between the Moonee Ponds Creek and Sydney Road.
McCrae named this land Moreland after the Jamaican slave plantation that was run by his father and grandfather. The landholdings were increased in 1841 to encompass a total of 908 acres, which was subdivided in 1858 including the establishment of Moreland Road. {{cite web |first=James|last=Lesh|url=https://hdp-au-prod-app-more-conversations-files.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/4416/4973/4128/A4_Name_Change_Report_30p_FA_WEB.pdf |title=Report on the place name: Moreland|publisher=Deakin University |date=April 2022 |accessdate=24 April 2024|archive-date=24 October 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231024234724/https://hdp-au-prod-app-more-conversations-files.s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/4416/4973/4128/A4_Name_Change_Report_30p_FA_WEB.pdf |url-status=live}}{{cite web |first=Dana |last=Morse |url=https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-14/moreland-council-name-change/101067568 |title=Moreland City Council to ditch slave plantation link, with ratepayers to choose new Woi-wurrung name |publisher=ABC News |date=14 May 2022 |accessdate=26 December 2022|archive-date=25 December 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221225132105/https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-14/moreland-council-name-change/101067568 |url-status=live}}{{cite news |first=Ashleigh |last=Barraclough |url=https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-07-03/moreland-council-votes-change-name-merri-bek/101204252 |title=Moreland Council votes to change name to Merri-bek, an Aboriginal word meaning 'rocky country' |work=ABC News |publisher=Australian Broadcasting Corporation |date=3 July 2022 |accessdate=26 December 2022 |archive-date=25 December 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221225153705/https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-07-03/moreland-council-votes-change-name-merri-bek/101204252 |url-status=live}}
