Critical reception
The Chicago Tribune wrote that the album "has an urban, sometimes bleak film noir undertow... the frenetic free jazz interplay between all members of the combo lifts this CD a notch above previous outings."{{Cite web|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1997-08-01-9708010071-story.html|title=CHICAGO'S DK3 COMBINES FREE JAZZ AND UNDERGROUND ROCK|first=David|last=Rothschild|website=chicagotribune.com|date=August 1997 }} Ox-Fanzine called the album "dark, cacophonic city music for an imaginary city film."{{Cite web|url=https://www.ox-fanzine.de/review/dk3-neutrons-cd-24570|title=Review|website=www.ox-fanzine.de}} CMJ New Music Monthly wrote that Neutrons "has a consistent tension despite its dynamic range."{{Cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_CoEAAAAMBAJ&dq=Neutrons+dk3+1997&pg=PA38|title=Reviews|work=CMJ New Music Monthly|date=October 13, 1997|publisher=CMJ Network, Inc.|via=Google Books}}
