New Zealand–Peru relations

New Zealand–Peru relations are the diplomatic relations between New Zealand and the Republic of Peru. Both nations are members of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, Cairns Group and the United Nations.

In 2002, New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff made an official visit to Peru. In November 2008, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key made an official visit to Peru to attend the 20th APEC Summit in Lima.[https://www.apec.org/Meeting-Papers/Leaders-Declarations/2008/2008_aelm/economy_representatives 2008 APEC Summit] In 2010, Peru closed its embassy in Wellington. In November 2016, Prime Minister Key returned to Peru to attend the 28th APEC Summit in Lima.

Since 2012, New Zealand has been an active observer of the Pacific Alliance which includes Peru, Colombia, Chile and Mexico. New Zealand launched negotiations towards a high-quality and comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) with the Pacific Alliance in June 2017. Once negotiations are concluded and the FTA is in force, New Zealand will become an Associated State of the Pacific Alliance.
