Off-TV Play is a feature of Nintendo's eighth-generation video game console, the Wii U. Like all video game consoles, the Wii U uses a console and a controller to manipulate an image on a television screen. The Wii U's unique feature is that its controller, the Wii U GamePad, has its own built-in screen for displaying images. It can display an entirely different image, or duplicate the television screen into the Wii U GamePad. It also allowed for 2-Player multiplayer, where each person would have their own screen with no need for Co-op splitscreen. Off-TV Play is the term used for when an entire game is played strictly on the controller, without the use of a television.{{cite web|last=Lynley |first=Matthew |url=https://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/11/19/nintendo-wii-u-review-roundup/ |title=Nintendo Wii U Review Roundup – Digits – WSJ |work=The Wall Street Journal |date=November 19, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012}}{{cite web|url=https://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2013/February/Spotlight-on-Wii-U-Off-TV-Play-728535.html |title=Spotlight on Wii U: Off-TV Play |publisher=Nintendo |date=February 27, 2013 |access-date=28 February 2013}} The GamePad also features two speakers that can be used for Off-TV Play. There is no standardized way to activate Off-TV Play and how it's implemented depends on the game.{{cite web |last=Splechta |first=Mike |url=http://www.gamesradar.com9.gamezone.com/products/wii-u/reviews/console-review-nintendo-s-wii-u-starts-its-own-dual-screen-revolution |archive-url=https://archive.today/20121216063037/http://www.gamesradar.com9.gamezone.com/products/wii-u/reviews/console-review-nintendo-s-wii-u-starts-its-own-dual-screen-revolution |url-status=dead |archive-date=December 16, 2012 |title=Console Review: Nintendo's Wii U starts it... | GameZone |publisher=Gamesradar.com9.gamezone.com |access-date=1 December 2012 }}

Background

The Wii U console was officially unveiled at E3 2011 in June 2011, where it was first detailed that the console's controller would feature a tablet-like touchscreen.{{cite web|url=http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2011/06/11/7-things-didnt-know-about-nintendo-wii-u/ |title=7 Things You Didn't Know About the Nintendo Wii U |publisher=Fox News Channel |access-date=1 December 2012}} Nintendo announced that a major focus of the console would be the ability to display the image seen on the television on the touchscreen, to continue playing the game if the television was needed for other uses, or the player needed to move away from the television.{{cite web|last=Stevens |first=Tim |url=https://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/live-from-nintendos-e3-2011-keynote/ |title=Live from Nintendo's E3 2011 keynote! |work=Engadget |date=June 7, 2011 |access-date=1 December 2012}} Official terms were given at E3 2012; the controller was named the Wii U GamePad and the concept of playing games strictly on its screen being labeled Off-TV Play.{{cite web|url=http://kotaku.com/5917363/better-friend-codes-achievements-and-more-nintendo-answers-our-burning-wii-u-questions |title=Better Friend Codes, Achievements and More: Nintendo Answers Our Burning Wii U Questions |publisher=Kotaku.com |date=June 11, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012}}

For supported games, a television isn't required to be connected to the Wii U; the Wii U can operate in Off-TV Play mode as long as the console is connected to a power source.{{cite web|last=Stark |first=Chelsea |url=https://news.yahoo.com/play-wii-u-anywhere-even-train-131926177.html |title=Play Your Wii U Anywhere – Even on a Train |publisher=Yahoo! News |date=November 27, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012}} However, as the processing is done on the console, and transmitted to the GamePad, the user must still keep within the transmitting range for it to work. Not all games support Off-TV Play, as some games conceptually rely on the asymmetric interplay between the television screen and the Wii U GamePad screen, such as Nintendo Land and ZombiU.{{cite web|url=http://mynintendonews.com/tag/off-tv-play/ |title=off-tv play |publisher=My Nintendo News |date=June 11, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012}}{{cite web|url=http://www.cubed3.com/news/16887/1/streaming-games-to-wii-u-gamepad-optional.html |title=Streaming Games to Wii U GamePad Optional for Developers – Known as Off-TV Play at C3 News |publisher=Cubed3.com |access-date=1 December 2012}}{{cite magazine|title=ZombiU review|url=http://www.edge-online.com/review/zombiu-review/|date=November 28, 2012|magazine=Edge|access-date=December 15, 2012}} However, all Wii U Virtual Console titles purchased from the Nintendo eShop include the option to use Off-TV Play.{{cite news|last=Goldfarb|first=Andrew|date=January 23, 2013|url=http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/23/wii-u-virtual-console-os-upgrades-announced|title=Wii U Virtual Console, OS Upgrades Announced|publisher=IGN|access-date=23 January 2013}} Original Wii games and Wii Virtual Console games were not initially compatible either, although this was changed in the Wii U's September 30, 2013 system update, which allows it, but only through the use of original Wii peripherals as input methods, meaning that the image would appear on Wii U GamePad screen, but its buttons would not work, requiring the use of Wii Remotes and Wii accessories for button and joystick input.{{cite web |url=http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/01/wii-u-system-update-enables-wii-games-to-display-on-gamepad |title=Wii U System Update Enables Wii Games to Display on GamePad |author=Otero, Jose |date=September 30, 2013 |publisher=IGN |access-date=September 30, 2013}} This was partially revised again in January 2015; when Nintendo began releasing Wii games digitally on the Wii U eShop. Because games re-released in this fashion were reworked to run straight from the Wii U operating screen, and not Wii Mode, the game allowed for Off-TV Play on Wii games with GamePad controls, provided the game allowed for Classic Controller usage in its Wii release.

Reception

The concept received mostly positive reviews, but was criticized due to the lack of a standardized way to activate it and it being an optional, instead of required, feature.{{cite web |last=Stein |first=Scott |url=http://reviews.cnet.com/nintendo-wii-u/ |title=Packed with promise, Wii U still has a lot to prove |publisher=CNET |date=November 19, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121216024820/http://reviews.cnet.com/nintendo-wii-u/ |archive-date=December 16, 2012 |url-status=live }} CNET praised the feature as being "nothing short of fantastic [...] because it prevents the monopolization of a TV while gaming – something anyone who doesn't live alone can appreciate. For those households where the main TV is in constant demand, off-TV sounds like a godsend." However, a major concern cited is that it wasn't a required feature, meaning the developers can opt out of making it possible in their respective games, so in theory, it could become obsolete. Kotaku praised it as well, stating that it is a good feature for those who like to multi-task, since it frees up the television for other uses.{{cite web|url=http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/11/wii-u-could-be-the-perfect-console-for-people-like-me/ |archive-url=https://archive.today/20121230145006/http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/11/wii-u-could-be-the-perfect-console-for-people-like-me/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=December 30, 2012 |title=Wii U Could Be The Perfect Console For People Like Me |publisher=Kotaku Australia |date= November 14, 2012|access-date=1 December 2012}} TechSpot described it as "a luxury few people asked for but that turns out to be wonderful to have". Destructoid praised it for being exactly the same as playing on the television, only "with some limited portability for no extra charge. Hard to find fault in that."{{cite web|url=http://www.destructoid.com/hands-on-with-call-of-duty-black-ops-ii-on-the-wii-u-234982.phtml |title=Hands-on with Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U |date=September 14, 2012 |publisher=Destructoid |access-date=1 December 2012}} GamesRadar praised the feature for being perfect for the avid television watcher, but criticized the fact that there wasn't a standardized way to activate it, such as its own button. IGN stated in their review for the Wii U, that in regards to single player experiences, they preferred it when the entire game could be transferred to the GamePad over using it in conjunction with a television.{{cite web|author=Nic Vargus 2|url=http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/21/wii-u-review |title=Nintendo Wii U Review |publisher=IGN |date=November 21, 2012 |access-date=1 December 2012}}

Some critics have argued that the image has superior quality while using Off-TV Play, while others have cited concerns over the small size of the screen making it difficult to see all the details of the image. Eurogamer's "Digital Foundry" testing showed that the Wii U's Off-TV Play feature outperformed Sony's similar Remote Play feature on its PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita systems in image quality, latency, and frame-rate.{{cite web|last=Leadbetter |first=Richard |url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-vita-remote-play |title=Digital Foundry vs. Vita Remote Play • Articles • |publisher=Eurogamer.net |date=November 30, 2013 |access-date=1 March 2014}} Pocket Gamer agreed, stating that Off-TV Play-offered far less lag than Remote Play.{{cite web|url=http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Other/Wii+U/feature.asp?c=49816 |title=guide to Nintendo Wii U's Off-TV Play | Other |date=April 6, 2013 |publisher=Pocket Gamer |access-date=1 March 2014}}
