The OnePlus 5 (also abbreviated as OP5) is a smartphone made by OnePlus. It is the successor to the OnePlus 3T, which was released in 2016. The OnePlus 5 was officially unveiled during a keynote on 20 June 2017 and first released on June 20, 2017. It was succeeded by the OnePlus 5T five months later on November 21, 2017.{{cite web|url=https://www.pcworld.com/article/3237111/android/oneplus-5t-specs-features-price-release-date.html|title=OnePlus 5T upgrades the OnePlus 5's great specs with a new screen and design}}

History

The Verge announced in May 2017 that the successor to the OnePlus 3 would be known as the OnePlus 5. While OnePlus did not officially state why the number four was skipped, it was speculated that it was due to the number four being considered unlucky (tetraphobia) in China.{{cite web|last1=Seifert|first1=Dan|title=The OnePlus 5 will arrive this summer|url=https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/5/5/15539300/oneplus-5-announcement-launch-timing-summer|website=The Verge|publisher=Vox Media, Inc.|access-date=5 May 2017|archive-url=https://archive.today/20170505151217/https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/5/5/15539300/oneplus-5-announcement-launch-timing-summer|archive-date=5 May 2017|url-status=live|language=en|date=5 May 2017}}

According to India Today, the "4" was skipped because OnePlus 2 was not very successful and now OnePlus considers even numbers unlucky.{{cite web|last1=Saha|first1=Sneha|title=Number 4 is not unlucky, it's just that OnePlus doesn't like even numbers anymore, so OnePlus 5|url=https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/features/story/number-4-is-not-unlucky-its-just-that-oneplus-doesnt-like-even-numbers-anymore-1023812-2017-07-12|website=India Today|access-date=2019-09-27|language=en|date=2019-07-12}}

OnePlus confirmed that the handset would feature a Snapdragon 835 processor prior to launch.{{Cite web|url=https://9to5google.com/2017/05/26/oneplus-5-qualcomm-snapdragon-835/|title=Snapdragon 835 processor confirmed for the OnePlus 5|last=Duino|first=Justin|date=2017-05-26|website=9to5Google|access-date=2017-06-01}} OnePlus also noted its work with the image processing firm DxO to improve the camera on the device.{{cite web|last1=Rutnik|first1=Mitja|title=OnePlus teamed up with the creators of DxOMark for the OnePlus 5 camera|url=http://www.androidauthority.com/oneplus-5-camera-developed-dxo-773446/|website=Android Authority|access-date=20 June 2017|archive-url=https://archive.today/20170620005647/http://www.androidauthority.com/oneplus-5-camera-developed-dxo-773446/|archive-date=20 June 2017|url-status=live|language=en|date=18 May 2017}}
