Description
Pineberry is a hybrid cross from Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana. A pineberry is smaller than a common strawberry, measuring between {{convert|15|and|23|mm|in|abbr=on|sigfig=1}}. When ripe, it is almost completely white, but with red achenes (the seeds). The plant is disease-resistant, and highly priced, although not profitable due to small-scale farming, small berry size and low yield. Pineberries are harvested in the spring and summer. First identified in South America around 2002, pineberries are cultivated in Belgium and exported from the Netherlands.{{cite web | url=http://www.freshfruitportal.com/news/2016/03/31/pineberry-breeder-introduces-white-strawberries-with-pineapple-punch/ | title=Pineberry breeder introduces white strawberries with pineapple punch | publisher=Fresh Fruit Portal | date=31 March 2016 | access-date=26 June 2016}}
Marketing
The fruit was dubbed "pineberry" for the UK market where it became available in 2010 to reflect its pineapple-like flavor, while still being a strawberry.{{cite web|url=http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Pineberries-At-Waitrose-Spring-Fruit-Looks-Like-Strawberry-But-Tastes-Like-Pineapple/Article/201003415589194 |title=Pineberries At Waitrose: Spring Fruit Looks Like Strawberry But Tastes Like Pineapple | work = Business |publisher=Sky News |access-date=2011-02-10}} Pineberries were first sold commercially in the United States in 2012,{{cite web|url=http://strawberryplants.org/2010/09/pineberry-pineberries/ |title=Pineberry & Pineberries |date=2010-09-13 |access-date=2014-07-21}} and were marketed to restaurants, bakeries and wholesale markets in Europe and Dubai.
