In a 1980 review, Billboard noted the "good production and musicianship" on Protect the Innocent and found that the album shows that Sweet "has possibilities beyond the new wave audience."{{cite magazine|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/80s/1980/BB-1980-03-08.pdf|title=Rachel Sweet: Protect the Innocent|magazine=Billboard|volume=92|issue=10|date=March 8, 1980|access-date=May 31, 2020|page=55|via=World Radio History}} Critic Robert Christgau likened her to "a new-wave Linda Ronstadt" and was less receptive, citing Sweet's self-penned "Tonight Ricky" as the album's only interesting song.
