{{#section:1981 New South Wales state election|LA Results}}

The 1981 New South Wales state election involved 99 electoral districts returning one member each. The election was conducted on the basis of optional preferential voting system. There was a significant change from the 1978 election as a result of the passage of the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections (Amendment) Act 1979,{{citation |title=Parliamentary Electorates and Elections (Amendment) Act 1979 No 152 |url=https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/view/pdf/asmade/act-1979-152 |format=PDF |via=NSW Legislation}} and the Constitution (Amendment) Act 1979.{{citation |title=Constitution (Amendment) Act 1979 No 38 |url=https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/view/pdf/asmade/act-1979-38 |format=PDF |via=NSW Legislation}} The effect of these Acts was to end the electoral malapportionment requiring that the number of electors within each electoral district be within 10%. Under the previous zoning system, a seat in the "central area" had a quota of 34,067, but could be as high as 40,880 while a "country area" seat had a quota of 26,016 but could be as low as 20,813.{{cite book |first1=Anne |last1=Twomey |author-link=Anne Twomey (academic) |title=The Constitution of New South Wales |year=2004 |publisher=Federation Press |isbn=9781862875166 |pages=[https://books.google.com/books?id=KayCZfZwafwC&pg=PA357 357] |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=KayCZfZwafwC&pg=PA357 |access-date=2021-11-04}} The effect of the 1980 redistribution was to create 6 new seats in Sydney Newcastle and Wollongong and abolishing 6 country seats.{{cite web |url=http://www.atlas.nsw.gov.au/public/nsw/home/topic/article/1980-redistribution.html |title=1980 Redistribution |work=Atlas of New South Wales |publisher=NSW Land & Property Information |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150623031821/http://www.atlas.nsw.gov.au/public/nsw/home/topic/article/1980-redistribution.html |archive-date=23 June 2015 |url-status=dead}}
