Rubigula is a genus of Asian passerine birds in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae.
Taxonomy
The genus Rubigula was introduced in 1845 by the English zoologist Edward Blyth.{{ cite journal | last=Blyth | first=Edward | author-link=Edward Blyth | year=1845 | title=Notices and descriptions of various new or little known species of birds (continued) | journal=Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal | volume=14, Part 2 | issue=164 | pages=546–602 [576] | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/40127351 }} The type species was designated as the ruby-throated bulbul by George Robert Gray in 1855.{{ cite book | last=Gray | first=George Robert | author-link=George Robert Gray | year=1855 | title=Catalogue of the Genera and Subgenera of Birds Contained in the British Museum | location=London | publisher=British Museum | page=47 | url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/17136686 }}{{ cite book | editor1-last=Mayr | editor1-first=Ernst | editor1-link=Ernst Mayr | editor2-last=Greenway | editor2-first=James C. This genus was formerly synonymized with the genus Pycnonotus. A molecular phylogenetic study of the bulbul family published in 2017 found that Pycnonotus was polyphyletic.{{Cite journal | last1=Shakya | first1=Subir B. | last2=Sheldon | first2=Frederick H. | date=2017 | title=The phylogeny of the world's bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) inferred using a supermatrix approach | journal=Ibis | volume=159 | issue=3 | pages=498–509 | doi=10.1111/ibi.12464| doi-access=free }} In the revision to the generic classification five species were moved from Pycnonotus to Rubigula.{{cite web| editor1-last=Gill | editor1-first=Frank | editor1-link=Frank Gill (ornithologist) | editor2-last=Donsker | editor2-first=David | editor3-last=Rasmussen | editor3-first=Pamela | editor3-link=Pamela Rasmussen | date=January 2021 | title=Bulbuls | work=IOC World Bird List Version 11.1 | url=https://www.worldbirdnames.org/bow/bulbuls/ | publisher=International Ornithologists' Union | access-date=26 June 2021}}
