Bates informally describes the music as "cinematic rock". In elaborating further, he said it's "as if a hard-rock band did the soundtrack to an epic blockbuster movie. ... We're blending symphonics with electronics with riff-driven, baritone guitar hard rock". Bates explained the evolution of sound with the band's second album, Vessels: "Whereas [Transmissions] was centered in the hard rock lane before, now it goes more metal at times, and the guitar work borrows from djent stylings, and it gets more ambient at times, using electronics at a more deeply integrated level. Whereas the strings were more cinematic, there was more of a quartet before, on this record it’s more of an orchestration."{{cite web|last=Kennedy |first=Jade |url=http://musicfeeds.com.au/features/with-starsets-vessels-dustin-bates-seeks-to-bring-out-the-scientist-in-all-of-us/ |title=With Starset's New Album 'Vessels' Dustin Bates Seeks To Bring Out The Scientist In All Of Us |publisher=Music Feeds |date=February 1, 2017 |access-date=May 24, 2017}}

Bates also stated he implemented some elements of EDM into the second album.{{cite web|last=Mettler |first=Mike |url=https://www.digitaltrends.com/music/dustin-bates-starset-interview/ |title=Starset's Dustin Bates Talks VR Audio, Hi-res Streaming, and Life On Mars |publisher=Digital Trends |date=April 7, 2017 |access-date=May 24, 2017}} Dave Richards Erie Times-News' described the band's sound as "blending the progressive aspirations of Muse with the openhearted approach of emotional and muscular power of bands like Breaking Benjamin".{{cite web |last= |first= |date=September 10, 2015 |title=Cinematic band Starset opens for Breaking Benjamin |url=https://www.goerie.com/story/entertainment/local/2015/09/10/cinematic-band-starset-opens-for/24940226007/ |access-date=April 11, 2023 |website=Go Erie |publisher=Erie Times-News}} Bates also includes a notable amount of harsh vocals as well as both raw and pitch corrected clean vocals for many different effects.{{cite web |last1=Keller |first1=Elizabeth |title=Album Review: Vessels by Starset |url=https://scrollonline.net/14426/a-e/album-review-vessels-by-starset/ |website=Scroll Online |access-date=December 7, 2020 |date=February 9, 2017 }}
