History

Sudocrem was developed in 1931 by Dublin-based pharmacist Thomas Smith. It was originally called "Smith's Cream", later "Soothing Cream". The name changed to Sudocrem in 1950 due to the Dublin accent pronunciation of soothing cream. {{Cite web |title=Soothing Families |url=https://www.sudocrem.co.uk/all-things-sudocrem/soothing-families |access-date=2024-12-03 |website=Sudocrem UK |language=en-GB}} During the 1960s, samples of Sudocrem that were given to new mothers in Ireland increased the popularity of the product and the brand was gradually introduced to the UK in the 1970s. Its makers claim it to be the leading nappy rash cream in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.{{cite web|title=Sudocrem: History Page|url=http://www.sudocrem.co.uk/history|website=www.sudocrem.co.uk|accessdate=6 February 2015}} Sudocrem was manufactured in Dublin, in the suburb of Baldoyle but is now manufactured in Bulgaria.{{cite web|last1=McCarthy|first1=Noelle|title=Spot the difference - Irish Examiner|url=http://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/features/spot-the-difference-193471.html|website=irishexaminer.com|date=12 May 2012 |accessdate=6 February 2015}} A 2012 Irish Independent article said: "Sudocrem is the spuds and bacon of skincare creams, the Guinness of gentle nappy rash reliefs and the Tayto of topical ointments,"{{cite web|title=Sudocrem: The cream of the crop|url=http://www.independent.ie/style/beauty/sudocrem-the-cream-of-the-crop-26844073.html|website=independent.ie|accessdate=6 February 2015}} following reports in both Irish and UK media celebrities were using the product to treat acne. There are now three Sudocrem branded products available in the UK: the original antiseptic healing cream,{{cite web|title=Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream|url=http://www.sudocrem.co.uk/antiseptic-healing-cream/|website=sudocrem.co.uk|accessdate=6 February 2015}} Sudocrem Care and Protect which is a nappy rash preventative {{cite web|title=Sudocrem Care and Protect|url=http://www.sudocrem.co.uk/care-and-protect|website=sudocrem.co.uk|accessdate=6 February 2015}} and Sudocrem Skin Care Cream which is an everyday acne cream aimed at the youth market.{{cite web|title=Sudocrem: Sudocrem Skin Care Cream|url=http://www.sudocrem.co.uk/skin-care-cream/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121019124012/http://www.sudocrem.co.uk/skin-care-cream |archive-date=19 October 2012 |website=sudocrem.co.uk|accessdate=6 February 2015}} (Archived Link added 14 May 2024)

Sudocrem's parent company Teva announced in May 2021 that is planning to close the Baldoyle plant and move production to Acatvis' Bulgarian plant in Troyan in 2023.{{cite web|last=Daly|first=Adam|title='Devastating': Sudocrem won't be made in Ireland after 2023 as production moves to Bulgaria|url=https://www.thejournal.ie/sudocrem-ireland-5430845-May2021/|access-date=2021-05-07|website=TheJournal.ie|language=en}} Teva said that reason for the closure was due to the growing international popularity of the cream, and the inability to make the site of the Baldoyle factory bigger to cope with the rising demand.{{Cite news|last=Goodbody|first=Will|date=2021-05-07|title=Teva to close Sudocrem plant in Dublin, 110 jobs to go|url=https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2021/0507/1217509-sudocream-dublin-plant/}}
