History

Swarajya was launched as a weekly magazine in 1956 by journalist Khasa Subba Rao, under the patronage of C. Rajagopalachari, a prominent independence activist and one of the founders of the Swatantra Party.{{cite news |title=Remembering Rajagopalachari the writer, with Kalki|url=http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/Remembering-Rajaji-the-writer-with-Kalki/2013/12/09/article1935468.ece|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140715065015/http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/Remembering-Rajaji-the-writer-with-Kalki/2013/12/09/article1935468.ece|url-status=dead|archive-date=15 July 2014|access-date=16 June 2014|work=The New Indian Express|date=9 December 2013}}{{cite news|title=Contributions of Rajaji and Kalki hailed|url=http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/article230580.ece |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140715065146/http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/article230580.ece |url-status=dead |archive-date=15 July 2014 |access-date=16 June 2014|work=The New Indian Express|date=16 May 2014}}

The magazine strongly advocated individual freedom and freedom of enterprise as against Nehru's socialist policies.{{cite news |title=Comrades, friends, rivals |url=http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/mag/2003/05/25/stories/2003052500010100.htm |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20030609000710/http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/mag/2003/05/25/stories/2003052500010100.htm |url-status=dead |archive-date=9 June 2003 |access-date=16 June 2014 |work=The Hindu |date=25 May 2003}} Minoo Masani, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, and R. = Relaunch in 2014 =

The magazine was relaunched as an online daily in September 2014, with Sandipan Deb as the Editorial Director; the first edition of the print magazine was launched in January 2015.{{cite news |title=Rajagopalachari's 'Swarajya' to be relaunched soon |url=http://www.livemint.com/Consumer/DwmLpRVJAHcanTLOrwtN2J/Rajagopalacharis-Swarajya-to-be-relaunched-soon.html |first1=Shuchi |last1=Bansal |date=17 September 2014 |work=Livemint |access-date=15 April 2015 |archive-date=13 April 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150413143530/http://www.livemint.com/Consumer/DwmLpRVJAHcanTLOrwtN2J/Rajagopalacharis-Swarajya-to-be-relaunched-soon.html |url-status=live }} Coimbatore-based Kovai Media Private Limited purchased the rights to the magazine from Chennai-based Bharathan Publishers, along with 40,000 pages from the earlier editions of the magazine. The magazine describes itself as "a big tent for liberal right of centre discourse".

In October 2016, it acquired OpIndia; in 2018, it became an independent entity.{{cite web|access-date=19 March 2020|title=Tables Turn on Twitter's Hindutva Warriors, and It's the BJP Doing the Strong-Arming|first1=Aleesha|last1=Matharu|url=https://thewire.in/media/twitter-handles-bjp-free-speech-right-wing-media|website=The Wire|archive-date=16 May 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200516165733/https://thewire.in/media/twitter-handles-bjp-free-speech-right-wing-media|url-status=live}} In 2018, Swarajya launched its Hindi edition.{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/SwarajyaMag/status/1029285119880654849|title=Swarajya on Twitter|website=Twitter|publisher=Swarajya|access-date=24 March 2019|archive-date=8 April 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190408190849/https://twitter.com/SwarajyaMag/status/1029285119880654849|url-status=live}}
