Sylwester Szmyd (born 2 March 1978) is a Polish former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2002 and 2016.

Born in Bydgoszcz, Szmyd competed as a climber who served as a leader in smaller stage races, and as a strong mountain domestique for his team leaders in the Grand Tours. He completed all of the 23 Grand Tours that he started during his career.{{cite news|first=Emil|last=Axelgaard|url=http://www.cyclingquotes.com/news/szmyd_announces_retirement/|title=Szmyd announces retirement|date=8 October 2016|accessdate=6 September 2021|work=CyclingQuotes.com|publisher=JJnet.dk A/S}}

Professional career

In 2009, Szmyd scored the first victory of his career when he crossed the finish line atop the Mont Ventoux during the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré. He had broken away with Alejandro Valverde ({{UCI team code|MOV|2009}}) and the pair finished together. Szmyd said afterward that he was so used to sacrifice himself as a domestique for his captains that his legs almost buckled in the last corner when he realized he would win.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/63rd-criterium-du-dauphine-libere-upt/stage-5/results|title=Szmyd takes his first win in Dauphiné stage five|work=Cycling News|publisher=Future Publishing Limited|date=12 June 2009|access-date=19 September 2012|author=Jean-François Quénet|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121014140637/http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/63rd-criterium-du-dauphine-libere-upt/stage-5/results|archive-date=14 October 2012}}

In the 2012 Giro del Trentino, Szmyd was allowed to race for himself and placed well on the final two stages of the race, which were mountainous. In stage 3, he came in second place after tackling a very steep climb, the Punta Veleno ({{convert|8.5|km|abbr=off}} at an average 15% gradient). The finish line was situated {{convert|1.5|km|abbr=on}} after the summit.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/giro-del-trentino-2012/stage-3/results|title=Pozzovivo prevails in Brenzone|work=Cycling News|publisher=Future Publishing Limited|date=19 April 2012|accessdate=19 September 2012|author=Daniel Benson}} On the last stage to the Pordoi Pass, Szmyd finished in fourth position at the altitude finish, securing his third place in the overall classification. Snow was falling as he, race winner Domenico Pozzovivo ({{UCI team code|CSF|2012}}) and Damiano Cunego ({{UCI team code|LAM|2012}}) were accepting their awards on the podium.{{cite news|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/giro-del-trentino-2012/stage-4/results|title=Pozzovivo wins 2012 Giro del Trentino|work=Cycling News|publisher=Future Publishing Limited|date=20 April 2012|accessdate=19 September 2012}}

He participated in the Giro d'Italia a couple of weeks later, riding in support of his leader Ivan Basso. He set the pace for the lead group numerous times in the hilly stages and managed a 28th general classification spot.{{cite news|url=http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/05/news/giro-ditalia-2012-stage-21-results_221416/2|title=Giro d’Italia 2012 stage 21 results|work=Velo News|publisher=Competitor Group, Inc.|date=29 May 2012|accessdate=19 September 2012}}

Szmyd left his team of four years {{UCI team code|LIQ|2012|nolink=yes}} at the end of the 2012 season, and joined the {{UCI team code|MOV|2013}} on a two-year contract, from the 2013 season onwards.{{cite news|url=http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/12613/Eros-Capecchi-and-Sylwester-Szmyd-quit-Liquigas-Cannondale-for-Movistar.aspx|title=Eros Capecchi and Sylwester Szmyd quit Liquigas-Cannondale for Movistar|work=VeloNation|publisher=VeloNation LLC|first=Ben|last=Atkins|date=11 August 2012|accessdate=12 August 2012}} In December 2014 Szmyd announced he was joining the Polish {{UCI team code|CCC|2015}} team on a one-year deal for 2015, after expressing dissatisfaction about his time at Movistar, where he was only selected for a Grand Tour once during his two years with the team.{{cite web |url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/sylwester-szmyd-joins-ccc-polsat-polkowice |title=Sylwester Szmyd joins CCC Polsat Polkowice |last1=Gadzała |first1=Paweł |date=20 December 2014 |website=cyclingnews.com |access-date=21 February 2015}}
