It consisted of 21 stages covering a total of {{convert|3192|km|mi|abbr=on}}, and was won by Alexander Vinokourov of the {{UCI team code|ONC|2006d}} cycling team. The points classification was won by Thor Hushovd of {{UCI team code|C.A|2006}}, and the mountains classification by Egoi Martínez of {{UCI team code|DSC|2006}}.
