Reviewer: It is a wonderful world (talk · contribs) 19:37, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

I'll review this! I have written a lot of articles on individual sporting events, but this is the first one I am reviewing. Maybe I'll glean some good ideas! IAWW (talk) 19:37, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Hi @Editør, the prose review is below. I decided to only comment on the major points and fix the more minor points myself. I found the "final" section was the most well-written. You did a good job of summarising the race without making it hard to follow. IAWW (talk) 19:41, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

::Thank you for your review. I've replied to everything but the scope comments, which I will come back to. – Editør (talk) 16:02, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

:::@Editør thanks for your responses. I believe almost everything is resolved, but I replied to a couple points with some queries. I also made some further copyedits to the prose which I didn't feel were significant enough to mention. I think the prose is now mostly up to GA quality. IAWW (talk) 22:50, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::::I think I have addressed all points. Let me know if the article requires further work. – Editør (talk) 13:14, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::@Editør Looks good to me! Passing now. Nice work. IAWW (talk) 20:48, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

I suggest linking "Irish team" or just "Irish" to "Ireland at the 2024 European Athletics Championships". You can do the same to "Dutch team", "Belgian team" etc. throughout the article.

:Added. – Editør (talk) 15:00, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

:These look good IAWW (talk) 22:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

You don't need to write "minutes" after each time. You actually don't ever need to write it. See the bottom of the table at MOS:UNITNAMES. To me it also feels very awkward writing minutes after the times at all. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:I think the time unit should be mentioned in some form in the article for clarity. I had tried to avoid endless repetition of the long form by writing the units in full only in the lead, but in abbreviated form in the rest of the prose where you would say the unit when reading the text out loud, and I left them out in the tables with an explanatory note in the column heading. – Editør (talk) 15:00, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::I'm fine with this for GA. IAWW (talk) 22:19, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

I think you should add a sentence near the beginning explaining that an outdoor track is 400 metres long, so each runner had to run one lap of the track. This makes it more understandable to readers who are not already familiar with athletics. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:I am not sure this should be explained in the lead though, this seems more like background than summary to me. In the background section it already says "that was held at the 400-metres outdoor track at the Stadio Olimpico". I have copyedited the next sentence, so information about running one round is now included there. Maybe you comment was prompted by the ambiguous "one round", so I have changed this into "one final race" to avoid confusion. – Editør (talk) 15:00, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::Happy with this IAWW (talk) 22:21, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

== Background ==

{{Green|The mixed 4 × 400 metres relay was newly introduced to the European Athletics Championships at the 2024 edition, that was held at the 400-metres outdoor track in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy}}: "which" should replace "that" here. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. – Editør (talk) 15:07, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|the world record was 3:08.80 mins and the world leading time was 3:10.73 mins, [which were] both set by the team of the United States in 2023 and on 5 May 2024}}: Add what I put in square brackets to make this grammatically correct. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. – Editør (talk) 15:07, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

I suggest linking "world leading time", and maybe add a brief explanation of what it means in parentheses. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Linked. With the link and in the context, I think an explanation is not necessary. – Editør (talk) 15:07, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::Agree. Be aware MOS:FORCELINK exists but I don't think this term is technical enough to be of concern. IAWW (talk) 22:23, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|both set by the team of the United States in 2023 and on 5 May 2024[, respectively]}}: Adding this word makes it grammatically clear that the world record was set in 2023 and the world best was set in 2024. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. I added the comma before "in 2023" though. – Editør (talk) 15:07, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

== Qualification ==

{{Green|only eight national teams could qualify}}: Using the word "only" here is not very neutral. It imposes a bias that it was not very many. This is an example of WP:EDITORIALising. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. – Editør (talk) 15:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|half as many as for the men's and women's 4 × 400 metres relays}}: It's unclear here whether you mean both the men's and women's relays combined, or half as many as each of the men's and women's relays. You can add either "combined" or "each" to the sentence to make this clear. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Clarified. – Editør (talk) 15:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

I suggest linking the men's and women's 4 × 400 metres relays to their respective event pages. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Linked. – Editør (talk) 15:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|The other seven teams qualified by the sum of their best two results during the qualification period from 1 January 2023 to 26 May 2024}}: Make it clear that the teams with the lowest sum of their two fastest results qualified. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Clarified. – Editør (talk) 15:16, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

== Final ==

The section name being "final" doesn't really make sense here as there was not multiple rounds. I suggest changing it to something like "race". IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:I agree that it seems a bit odd, but I kept 'Final' as section heading because it is what the race is called by the organization (per source), as it is a race where medals can be won. – Editør (talk) 15:38, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::Fair point. Happy to keep it if the sources use this terminology. IAWW (talk) 22:25, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|starting at 22:20 (UTC+2)}}: I like how you included and linked the timezone here. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|Alexander Doom took the lead after 100 metres}}: Did he hold the lead to the end of the leg? IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Yes, I've tried to clarify it. – Editør (talk) 15:38, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

::I suggest making it clear Doom is from Belgium, and clarifying that he led until the end of the leg. Something like: "100 metres into the third leg, Alexander Doom passed Edoardo Scotti of Italy and Thomas Barr of Ireland, and he held his lead until the end of the leg;" IAWW (talk) 22:30, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

:::I have copyedited the section. — Editør (talk) 12:45, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|whereas Isaya Klein Ikkink of the Netherlands handed over in fourth position}}: Using "whereas" is a bit weird here, as there is not a clear contrast between Ikkink's leg and Doom's leg. Replacing "whereas" with a new sentence would fix this. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. – Editør (talk) 15:38, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

{{Green|During the anchor leg, Sharlene Mawdsley of Ireland passed Helena Ponette of Belgium after 300 metres, and was shortly followed in passing by Alice Mangione of Italy}}: "in passing" is a common phrase in English that means something different to how it is used here. It means "Casually or briefly; without giving much attention or detail; as a side note rather than the main focus". Try and reword the sentence to avoid this unintended meaning. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:Changed. – Editør (talk) 15:38, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

You don't need to cite the same source multiple times in a row. You can just put it at the end of the content it supports, unless it is a separate paragraph. IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

Earwig finds nothing, and since all the sources are online it is extremely unlikely to be missing something. I checked additionally on the spot check and found no issues.

= Scope (Criteria 3a, 3b) {{cloc}} =

The article is absent of media coverage of the event, which in my opinion means it does not meet the broadness requirements for GA. Here are some sources:

  • {{Cite web |title=Gold medal 'everything we've dreamed of' - O'Donnell |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/articles/cmjjv3r30evo}}
  • {{Cite web |title=Ireland win inaugural 4x400m mixed relay at 2024 European Athletics Championships |url=https://www.olympics.com/en/news/ireland-win-inaugural-4x400m-mixed-relay-at-2024-european-athletics-championships}}
  • {{Cite web |title=Euro gold for Ireland in mixed relay in Rome |url=https://athleticsweekly.com/event-reports/euro-gold-for-ireland-in-mixed-relay-in-rome-1039988356/}}

These sources can be used to add facts to the article and give context to facts in the article. E.g. "Chris O'Donnell of Ireland said after the race that it was "everything we've dreamed of"", or "Jason Henderson of Athletics Weekly described the Irish team as "flying"". IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

In fact, without these sources, the article does not meet notability guidelines, as the article does not reference the "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" (WP:N). IAWW (talk) 20:36, 24 April 2025 (UTC)

:I have added a statistic and a quote based on these three sources. – Editør (talk) 13:12, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

::That's better. The quote is rather long but I don't think it's a GA concern. IAWW (talk) 20:43, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

To prevent link rot, it can be a good idea to archive the web links in the references. You can do this by linking to archived versions manually, but be aware if you use Citation templates, you can just paste the page name into WP:IABOT and it will archive most of them for you, which is rather convenient.
